Overview

Doody's Review Service - 5 Stars!

The Second Edition of Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses: Appraisal and Application of Research continues to serve as the definitive reference for transitioning research into nursing practice. Based on the innovation-decision process (IDP), each unit is shaped according to the five steps of the IDP: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. This unique organizational approach combined with updated case studies and ethical principles allows the research process to be tangible and linked with strategies that promote advancement.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN (Slippery Rock University )
Description: This book describes the steps of the research process using the innovation-decision process (IDP) model and includes an online component for application of the concepts.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students with the basics of the research process and how to apply the evidence to practice. This is a worthwhile objective as nurses are expected to have these skills.
Audience: The target audience is baccalaureate undergraduate nursing students in an introductory nursing research course. The authors are nurse educators.
Features: Although the book has the usual chapters covering the research process, it focuses on how to use the evidence. It is organized around the steps of the IDP model, which involves knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. For example, the chapters in the unit on knowledge cover identifying research questions, finding sources of evidence, and linking theory, research, and practice. Ethical concepts are woven throughout the chapters. The information is provided in small bites to foster mastery of the content. The student online component includes animated flashcards, critical thinking questions, crossword puzzles, interactive glossary, journal articles with response grids, learning objectives, student quizzes, web links, and materials for applying what they have learned.
Assessment: This book should be very useful to the target audience, especially since the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) requires that nursing programs prepare baccalaureate nursing students with a basic understanding of the process of nursing research. The chapters are user friendly and are focused on student mastery of concepts. The book is not intended a resource for conducting research.
