Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Das erste umfassende Handbuch zur evidenzbasierten Urologie bietet aktuelle Informationen über die Sicherheit und Wirksamkeit aller potenziell möglichen Therapien. Eine wertvolle Quelle für jeden praktizierenden Urologen.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Patrick J Shenot, MD(Thomas Jefferson University)
Description: This book provides practical, evidenc- based recommendations on the appropriateness of both medical and surgical interventions in common urologic conditions.
Purpose: "This book aims to address focused, clinical questions across all sub-specialties of urology to help urologists practice according the current best evidence. The recent U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendation against PSA-based screening for prostate cancer has heightened the awareness among practicing urologists of the importance of fluencey in the language and priciples of evidence based medicine (EBM). Many practicing urologists, however, do not have a basic understanding of terminology regularly used in EBM. This book is a worthwhile contibution to this field."
Audience: This book is aimed at practicing urologists but should be of interest to both residents and medical students. Chapters are written by recognized authorities in their fields.
Features: The first six chapters provide a foundation in EBM with chapters on techniques such as searching for evidence, rating the quality of medical evidence, clinical trials in urology, conduct and interpretation of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and health economics in urology. The remainder of the book addresses most common clinical problems in urology such as antibiotic prophylaxis, medical and surgical management of incontinence, and management of BPH, stone disease, and erectile dysfunction. Chapters also cover the management of every common urological malignancy.
Assessment: The book succeeds largely because of its organization around clinically focused questions that are subjected to systematic literature searches and appraisal of the quality of evidence, followed by practical recommendations that reflect the best evidence. This is a worthwhile addition to any urologist's library. It should be required reading for any urologist with an interest in EBM and it provides an excellent reference for preparation for certification examinations.
