"Peaceful" is the most common entry in the visitors' at St. Michael and All Angels Church, where high above the nave, gilded wings outspread, a veritable choir of carved angels open their mouths in eternal song. But outside the church, in the tiny town of Walston, the atmosphere is disturbing indeed. A series of terrifying phone calls is attacking the sanity of the rector's young bride. A nosy old biddy is stirring up trouble for the London couple in Foxglove Cottage. Half the parish is singing a chorus of protest over the hiring of a professional choir - and the disbanding of the old one. The rector himself, Father Stephen Thorncroft, is compromised over the election of the new church warden that took place without his consent. And the gruesome murder of one of the town's most familiar faces has the priest looking for help from above. His prayers are answered by his old friends Lucy Kingsley and David Middleton-Brown, who soon find themselves unraveling the tangled relationships and dark motives of the villagers. As Lucy and David discover adultery, lust for power, and malicious gossip emanating from little minds, their suspicions turn to fear...fear that a killer who is no angel has a devilish plan to shed even more blood.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The Nick and Nora Charles of the church set, lawyer David Middleton-Brown and artist Lucy Kingsley star in Charles's fifth Book of Psalms mystery (A Dead Man Out of Mind, etc.). Walston is a "small, rather undistinguished Norfolk village" whose landscape is dominated by the spire of the magnificent church of St. Michael and All Angels. Apparently, it's only the landscape that the church dominates, for the inhabitants practice most of the deadly sins and a few that are just plain annoying. First, there's the less than warm welcome given the new minister, earnest and sensitive Stephen Thorncroft, by his new parishioners, and the overly heated one his young bride Becca endures from an obscene phone caller. Enid Bletsoe raises busybodyness to a murderous degree after learning that newcomer Gillian English, a young divorced mother whom Enid planned to take under her wing, has a woman lover. Plotting to take Gillian's young daughter from her, Enid makes a quiet charge of child abuse. Then Flora Newell, vestry member and child welfare worker beginning to investigate the abuse charges, is found dead on Gillian's doorstep. With the plot rolling in earnest, Stephen and Becca call in their friends, Middleton-Brown and Kingsley, to pursue a discreet investigation. Meanwhile, everyone is worshipping together on Sundays. Charles's characterizations are entertainingly venomous and penetrating, with just enough believable goodness to balance the equally believable evil at play under Walston's serene surface. (Oct.)
Library Journal
The latest serial title featuring artist Lucy Kingsley and solicitor David Middleton-Brown should enthrall fans and new readers alike. Summoned to an ancient Norfolk village by the new vicar and his wife for help with church-related law, Lucy and David become enmeshed in several local upsets. A spiteful and narrow-minded widow accuses a lesbian couple of child abuse, a lie that culminates in murder. Before they can solve the case, however, Lucy and David must also deal with the obscene phone calls, kidnapping, adultery, and an apparent suicide. The complicating twists unravel with masterful skill; a real joy to read.
Kirkus Reviews
The fifth in the author's Book of Psalms series (A Dead Man Out of Mind, 1995, etc.). Here, once again, detecting duo London lawyer David Middleton-Brown and artist Lucy Kingsley, his reluctant-to-commit lover, are embroiled with a troubled church congregation. This one is set in the tiny East Anglian village of Walston, where David's old friend Stephen Thorncroft is the recently installed, newly married rector of splendid, ancient St. Michaels and All Angels Church. For Stephen's young wife Becca, honeymoon bliss has been replaced by terror, inspired by a series of obscene phone calls that always occur when she's alone, and so shaming that she's been unable to report them to husband or police. The village is presently abuzz with gossip, fueled by mean-spirited neighbor Enid Bletsoe, about the new owners of Foxglove Cottage—lesbian couple Gillian English and Louise Sutherland, along with Gillian's little daughter Bryony. There's talk, too, of the newly named Churchwarden—social worker Flora Newall—and of how the vote will go for the proposed expansion of Ingram's meatpacking plant, using Church property. All of this pales when Flora dies of poisoning after drinking tea with Gillian, and rector Stephen calls on David and Lucy for help in proving Gillian's innocence. There's another murder before the pair can both identify the real killer and expose Becca's tormentor.

Charles goes to her usual extravagant lengths—with Church history, rituals, and politics; subplots galore and endless cups of tea—but still manages to keep her witches' brew a-bubble. Less might have been more, but English-village fans won't complain.
