Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - M.H.B. Hughes
DC Comics carries on with number five in its “Cosmic Adventures in the Eighth Grade” series of graphic novels featuring SuperGirl. Without a cast of characters, it’s hard to tell protagonist SuperGirl from the time-travel version of Supragirl, who is Supergirl from the past—or maybe the future. Author notes try to keep it straight, but even the author’s tire of the effort. The plot involves the niece of Superman nemesis Lex Luther. Further confusion stems from Supergirl having a human name of Linda Lee, while an earthling badgirl is known as ‘Belinda Zee.’ Of course, Belinda was a clone of Supergirl, illustrating that goodness does not clone well. The reader mainly uses hair color to track each girl’s goodness/badness quotient. Yikes, a list of the cast of characters is needed! Supergirl’s magical horse displays clenched-teeth, maximum disbelief in the storyline, indicated by an expression indicative of sour oats. Streaky-the-cat provides an evil additional (read extraneous) character, a cat with catastrophic capability. Confusion arises as to who or what but the boarding school girls wreck havoc in jealous rages, combined with wielding just enough superpower to cause their own accidental stratospheric falls. Stay tuned for the next volume?but hope that a roadmap to the names shows up and that more of a plot ensues. Reviewer: M.H.B. Hughes; Ages 8 to 12.
