Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
Number 14 in the series "Choose Your Own Nightmare" features a pen pal whose letters arrive with alternately unnerving and disastrous results. This book is not recommended on a variety of counts. First and foremost: it does not succeed as a "Choose Your Own Adventure" because very few choices are left to the reader. In most books of this genre, the majority of the pages culminate in a choice for the reader, " If you choose to... go to page..., but if you choose to...then go to page..." All but two or three of the pages in the stories in this book end with a command, "Turn to page..." Rather than an invitation to participate in an interactive experience, then, this book becomes a story collection whose pages have been jumbled. In addition to this objection, there is the issue about the appropriateness of writing horror stories for young children who will be drawn to this book with its appealing cover, easy-to-read language and large print. Personalizing the horror by using the word "you" throughout the book only heightens its age-inappropriateness. Which is not to say that this book wouldn't sell.
