Overview

A revolutionary-yet simple and practical-guide to staying fit and healthy based on evolutionary medicine.

Countless books and nutrition experts have advised modern readers to adopt the best of the "cave-man diet" that avoids processed foods and refined carbohydrates. But how and what people eat is only the beginning of what the study of human evolution can teach us about overall health and well-being. Based on the latest research in the burgeoning field of evolutionary medicine, Evolution Rx provides readers with not only an understanding of the underlying science of this discipline but with a practical means to making nutritional and lifestyle changes that address a wide range of topics from exercise and injury prevention to allergies, heart health, cancer, Alzheimer's, and more:

• Why eating more fat, not less, can fuel weight loss
• Why human bodies can't register fullness when eating carbohydrates-and what to do about it
• Why getting more sun leads to better health
• Why stretching before exercise-or after an injury- is a bad idea
• Why children should be encouraged to get dirty

Provocative, science-based, and practical, Evolution Rx presents a new and powerful way to understand the human body and how to promote vibrant health.

    THIS BOOK IS AMAZING

I heard Dr. Meller being interviewed on a radio program and was impressed enough to pick up his book, which I read with growing interest. It has really helped me change the way I go about keeping my family healthy. I thought I was doing the right thing by not allowing my two little ones to play in the dirt behind our house with the neighbor kids, or to wrestle with the dog on the lawn. I wouldn't let them touch the animals at the local petting zoo. I was afraid they'd catch something. Big mistake. According to Dr. Meller's book, children who grow up in a scrubbed and sanitary suburban environment like ours will have more allergies and other health problems when they are older than kids living in underprivileged or less than clean surroundings. It seems evolutionary medicine (his specialty) dictates that the immune system in children must be exposed to all kinds of "nasty" germs and parasites in order to build up a tolerance. The book tells how Stone Age people were healthier than modern humans because as kids they were in constant contact with things like animal fur and weeds and yukky things from the forest This book showed me how our immune system needs to be trained early on to recognize what will harm us and what won't. There are many other concepts like this in the book and all parents really should read this. I now understand the link between Stone Age people and ourselves. It sounds strange, but we're the same humans and we need to understand how they lived and survived in their dangerous environment.
Now I see that much of what I thought was good for my family was totally wrong. I really appreciate the heads up. Many thanks to Dr. Meller.

NICE! FUN TO READ AND GUARANTEES BETTER HEALTH

My wife and her girlfriends raved about this new book so much I had to read it to see what all the fuss was about. Wow, what an eye opener a doctor who shows why we don't need doctors as much as we think. He proves we don't need to do a lot of things we've been told. Forget eight glasses of water a day; be leery of the mania for organic food; be suspicious of doctors who prescribe pills at the drop of a symptom, and much more. In fact, this book exposes so many health related myths, misconceptions and unfounded fears it would take many pages to list them all. Meller explains in easy to follow and even humorous prose (some of his comments are a real hoot) why our Stone Age ancestors hold the key to good physical and mental health. It's all about the evolution of our minds and bodies and how we are genetically programmed for good health, since before caveman times. I read it in two sittings and I usually require a dozen to finish a whole book! According to Meller's extensive research within the emerging field of Evolutionary Medicine, after hundreds of thousands of years the never-ending process of evolution has built up the human mechanism to withstand all kinds of germs and injuries, etc. We don't need to worry so much about our health if we just follow a sensible diet (which Meller details; meat is okay, thank you) and avoid jumped-up fads for staying healthy and fit. The book shows just how amazing and resilient we really are and avoids the pitfalls of being overly technical. This is a book anyone can read. Meller comes off as a wise and compassionately practical physician who began his long career with hands-on field work in the health practices of various cultures around the world. I'd recommend Evolution Rx to anyone who wants to know about the latest in medical discoveries related to everyday fitness and well being. I hope Obama reads it.
