311 are the grizzled graybeards of alternative music. For nearly ten years their funkified, left-field take on the rap-metal zeitgeist has been soundtracking dormitory keg parties -- that's a thousand lifetimes for some of these fly-by-night alt combos. In that stretch they've had their ups 1994's Grassroots and their relative downs the clunky Transistor, but they've always stayed creative, quietly building a reputation for consistency. In keeping with the band's creational verve and veteran status, Evolver at first seems to be their Statement Album, complete with a hilariously overwrought cover painting, and that snarky referential title. All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
But it's a bit misleading because musically, the album turns out to be built from the usual 311 components. It's not their best work, but fans will enjoy it and there's little of the filler that's plagued the past few offerings. "Creatures [For a While]" is Evolver's "Come Original," its inescapable riff wrapped around stinging snare hits and S.A.'s endearing/annoying drop-ins. "Crack the Code" and "Sometimes Jacks Rule the Realm" account for the stylistic departure portion of the album, the former drifting lightly between dubby electronica and an S.A.-sung rasta rock lilt, the latter weaving acoustic guitar and echo around co-vocalist Nick Hexum's earnest lyricisms. Feel free to get a refill during these songs. However, with "Same Mistake Twice," an explosive standout, Evolver hits its best stretch, followed by "Still Dreaming" and "Give Me a Call." The tracks embody each tenet of 311's sound, from synth-based atmospherics through thick guitar chording, unique vocal phrasing, and bleary eyed reggae interpretation. Though it looks like a statement album, the prog masterpiece that the fizzling Transistor never was, Evolver is actually a rephrasing of what 311's always been saying. In a word, it's reliable. And isn't that what veterans are for?

    Evolver

311 didnt make this cd as good as their first album or soundsystem. sa doesnt do to much rapping and gave his turntables a rest. their are real mellow songs like seems uncertain and sometimes jacks rule the realm. but has a mix of good songs like still dreaming and other side of things. good album but i hope the next one turns out a little better.

    Evolver-311 Revolution

Evolver is simply an awesome CD. Fans of both the old and new 311 music will both agree that this album is one of the band's best. Great songs like "Don't Dwell," "Crack the Code," and "Same Mistake Twice" help propel this CD to the top of the 311 ranks. I would strongly recommend this CD to people who are already 311 fans and even to people who have just recently heard "Creatures." Believe me, you'll love it! Nick Hexum and Tim Mahoney are unbelievable on guitar, while P-Nut is his usual self with some great bass playing. Chad backs everything up with excellent drumming, and SA Martinez rounds out the vocals. With band members this awesome, how could a band not be good? Just buy the CD and become a 311 fan like so many others out there.

    311 for life

Ever since I was enlightened by the music and energy of three-eleven life has been shown to me for the better. If you are looking to obtain a more positive outlook 311 is an excellent way to go.

311 is the best band in the world

311s latest album is exceptional. It shows them moving forward with their music, and at the same time, doing what they do best. Nick Hexum's voice is the pure definition of beauty. SAs voice is smooth too. But I think SA is the real poet between the two, and he definitely is the more abstract vocalist at times. tim on guitar is awesome. He has some solos on this album that are out of this world. pnut on bass is amazing...check out his instrumental at the end of sometimes jacks rule the realm, good stuff. Chad is the best hip hop/reggae drummer out there. He also has roots to his drum corps days in high school, so you can notice his different styles in the various songs here. All in all, this album is a must have for any 311 fan, or for anyone interested in different, beautiful music. 311 rocks!!!

    It's a great CD

All I have to say is that ever since I picked up this album, its been one of my favorites, I love the way they can mix all these types of music together and make it sound so good. I haven't been able to put it down. I really recommend it! Great work 311!

    Evolver

Evolver is by far the most diverse and entertaining album yet by 311. As a long time fan of 8 years, I have heard most of what 311 has to offer and I was very impressed by this release. With songs like Crack the Code, Still Dreaming, and Don’t Dwell, Nick Hexum makes me feel like I am right there experiencing the emotions he felt when inspired to write these catchy tunes. The track entitled Seems Uncertain is a song that makes me think of war, but in way that more people can relate to. It is expressed in a unique way, as though it’s just a thought rumbling through your brain. In Other Side of Things and Give Me A Call, I cannot help but notice the great improvement and eclectic range of SA, who seems to have been less melodic and more choppy in his vocals on past albums. Track Reconsider Everything shows a new high pitched guitar lead from Tim Mahoney that I have never experienced from the band. It is almost an 80’s sound, but groovier. Evolver was a real treat to listen to, with new sounds a quirks and the same style you come to expect from 311. All and all I give it a 9.5. Jennifer Akber

    Disappointed 311 Fan

I was hyped up for months, somewhat-patiently awaiting the release of Evolver. I went to the store, bought it and immediatly popped it into my cd player. As I began listening(after skipping over Creatures, which I have been hearing for awhile), my enthusiasm dropped. The first thing I noticed is that the music on this cd(not on all the tracks, but at least 5 of them) are the exact same as some of the music on From Chaos. I was looking forward to hearing new stuff, and was disappointed when I heard the same thing I listened to a few years ago. Another disappointment is the songs themselves. While there are a couple of good songs with catchy lyrics, the cd doesn't have many of the toe-tapping, keeping-beat-with-thumbs-on-steering-wheel, songs like I grew accustomed to on From Chaos. I sent an email to all my friends telling them this cd was coming out and to go buy it, and as soon as I heard this cd, the first thing I did was send out another email telling my friends not to buy it, and to advise their other friends to do the same. I would rather have downloaded the two songs on the cd I like, rather than paying $10 for a cd I'm hardly ever going to listen to. Time to listen to From Chaos again.

    A Return to Earth

311 has landed once again, on planet Earth, to take us on an emotional roller coaster that will give you goose bumps and leaves you guessing, what is missing from the picture. It is a breakthrough ablum for 311 because of the progression and diversity of the music and lyrics without losing sight of unity. The song "Still Dreaming" will be in a future big mountain viedo.

    311's Best Effort

Evolver is by far 311's best album to date. They have truly out done themselves on this one. It is a great mix of rock, rap & reggae. The first single "Creatures(For A While)" is an amazing example of 311's harder side, while songs like "Seems Uncertain", "Beyond the Gray Sky",and "Sometimes Jacks Rule the Realm" showcase their ability write songs that are thouhght provoking and sincere.

    311 Evolver CD Review

This album is great. It takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride. From energetic, rockin' songs like "Creatures" and "Reconsider Everything" to a mellodic, mellow, yet powerful song like "Beyond The Gray Sky". Evolver has something for everyone. Dancehall vibes on "Crack The Code" and "Give Me A Call" make those two of my favorites. And funk infused "Don't Dwell" also pleases the ears as a wide variety of music comes from this amazing group of musicians and people. They maintain the positive vibes that makes 311 the band they are. I'm very pleased with the work put into this album. Go pick it up!! Happy listening.

    Kick Az!

This album is definitely a GREAT change. 311 has put out some kick az albums, but this one is kind of a return to the older 311. It's great! I always go to their concerts and this Unity tour was awesome! I reccomend EVERYONE go get it!
