Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Some 660,000 ex-offenders are released into American communities each year. Presently, 70 percent of them are returned to prison within three years, a statistic that the Krannichs (Job Hunting Tips for People with Not-So-Hot Backgrounds) believe can only be changed if ex-offenders can obtain gainful employment. While many employers may not want to hire someone with a criminal record, others are willing to give ex-offenders a chance. The authors do not touch on such possible stumbling blocks as drug addiction, mental illness, or learning disabilities: they focus only on men and women physically and mentally able to hold down a job. With to-the-point advice, graphics, questionnaires, and statistics, they take ex-offenders through ten steps that show them how to get a job, hold on to it, and even advance up the ladder of success. While the final outcome has a touch of wishful thinking about it, such advice cannot hurt those who have access to it. To start, the men and women are told to change their attitudes and focus on their strong points. They must often consider relocating to a new community; seek assistance from inmate organizations, family, and acquaintances; learn how to network for information; and develop good interview skills. On the top step sits success, where individuals can negotiate their own salaries and benefits. Bottom Line While the advice offered here is for ex-offenders, a great deal of it, e.g., the chapter on writing a r sum , can be used by a broader readership. The book is essential for correctional facility libraries and correctional counselors but will also be useful in public libraries.-Frances Sandiford, formerly with Green Haven Correctional Facility Lib., Stormville, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
