Overview

In 1992 Italy was convulsed by two brazen Mafia assassinations of high-ranking officials. The latest "excellent cadavers" were Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the Sicilian magistrates who had been the Cosa Nostra's most implacable enemies. Yet in the aftermath of the murders, hundreds of "men of honor" were arrested and the government that ad protected them for nearly half a century was at last driven from office. This is the story that Stille tells with such insight and immediacy in Excellent Cadavers. Combining a profound understanding of his doomed heroes with and unprecedented look into the Mafia's stringent codes and murderous rivalries, he gives us a book that has the power of a great work of history and the suspense of a true thriller.

"Riveting...a well-paced and highly informative account stocked with well-drawn characters."—Philadelphia Inquirer

"Masterful...[Stille] delivers a stiletto-sharp portrait of the bloodthirsty Sicilian mafia."—Business Week

From the author of Benevolence and Betrayal comes a gripping account of the criminal investigation--told with the pace and drama of an investigative thriller--that exposed the crucial alliance between the mafia and the Italian government that has existed for the last 50 years.

Editorial Reviews

Richard Bernstein
Absorbing, detailed history . . . Iucidly and soberly recounted. . . . Mr. Stille's impressive volume may erase the illusion that, given all of the movies and other books that have appeared over the years, you already know most of what there is to know about the always compelling subject of Cosa Nostra. Until you read Excellent Cadavers, you probably don't.... Mr. Stille is a writer to watch.
The New York Times
Jonathan Schwartz
Authoritative.... Excellent Cadavers is a comprehensive, engrossing lesson in how to interpret the signs-past, present and future-of the Mafia's role in Italian society.... A compelling drama.
Newsday
Los Angeles Times Book Review
Stille's work on the relationships between prosecutors and informers is the stuff of le Carre's novels.... Excellent Cadavers is an act of faith that humans will work and sacrifice to live decently. It is a fine monument to those who died and those who live to act on that hope.
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
An excellent account of two Sicilian prosecutors whose investigation of the Mafia led to the top levels of the Italian government and eventually, to their own murders. Aug.
