Excello Story, Vol. 3: 1957-1961

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
Excello was hitting its prime as a good R&B, blues and rock label in this era. This has swamp-blues by Slim Harpo just one song, but that's okay as he's well-represented by single-artist anthologies, Lightnin' Slim, Lonesome Sundown and Lazy Lester, who's represented by the great "I Hear You Knockin'" and the original version of "I'm a Lover, Not a Fighter" covered by the Kinks in the '60s. There's more than Louisiana blues, though. For doo wop, there's the Gladiolas' original version of "Little Darlin'" covered for a big pop hit by the Diamonds, and the one-shot smash "Oh Julie" by the Crescendos. Carol Fran's "Emmitt Lee" is top-notch, early New Orleans soul that will find favor with any Irma Thomas fan, so close is the arrangement to the sound of Thomas' early records. The sound strays closer to straight rock & roll with Lattimore Brown's "Somebody's Gonna Miss Me" and two early sides by swamp pop legend Warren Storm.
