Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anita Barnes Lowen
Every kid needs an excuse now and again—an excuse to get those bothersome grownups to stop telling you what to do and how to do it. David Mortimore Baxter is the master of excuses and he has put them together in a book. Read each chapter and you will be prepared for just about any situation. Do not want to eat Mom's experimental veggie loaf? Tell her that it is so incredible you are saving some for later. Caught throwing a spitball? Explain to your teacher that you and your friend were studying the science of flying objects. But remember "using excuses can get you into more trouble than you were in before you used them." The first chapter introduces readers to all the people they will meet in the book. The back matter includes a glossary, discussion questions, writing prompts, and a link to Fact Hound, an internet site where readers can learn about topics related to this book. A funny book that all kids will enjoy and, with its larger print and well-spaced paragraphs, an excellent choice for reluctant readers. The publisher lists the reading level as 3.6, but this book will certainly appeal to older readers as well.

Meet the Author

When Karen Tayleur was growing up, her father told her many stories about his own childhood. These stories continued to grow. She says, "I always enjoyed the retelling, and wanted to create a character who had the same abilities with 'bending the truth.' " And David Mortimore Baxter was born! Karen lives in Australia with her husband, two children, two cats, and one dog.

Brann Garvey lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife, Keegan, their dog, Lola, and their very fat cat, Iggy. Brann graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of fine arts degree. He later attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he studied illustration. In his free time, Brann enjoys being with his family and friends. He brings his sketchbook everywhere he goes.
