Description: This is the fifth edition of the gold standard for exercise testing and prescription. The format is nearly identical to the previous edition published in 1999, but the authors have updated information in this field which is changing so rapidly. There are some new online features and ancillaries for both students and instructors.
Purpose: This book is designed for an advanced exercise testing and prescription class. The main purpose is to assist readers in preparing for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certifications and for ACSM's new registry for the clinical exercise physiologists (RCEP).
Audience: The book is predominantly targeted at graduate students in exercise science but will also be an excellent resource for individuals working in all aspects of the exercise and wellness field. The author has proven to be an established expert in exercise testing and prescription and in the field of health-related physical fitness.
Features: This author covers the basics of exercise physiology and exercise testing and prescription. The most important contribution of the book is the information and exercise prescription of problems that need special consideration such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, mental health problems, older adults, osteoporosis, and arthritis. The author also does a nice job of including information on nutrition where appropriate. The author has expended an enormous amount of effort in making sure that the material is well referenced and the tables and figures are important assets as well. In addition, this book is extremely practical, which will be much appreciated by students.
Assessment: The author has made valuable updates in the book that represents the standard for study in advanced exercise testing and prescription.

Meet the Author

David Nieman is a professor of health and exercise science, and director of the Human Performance Lab at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. His research focus during the past twenty years has been exercise immunology, with a secondary emphasis on sports nutrition, obesity, aging, and nutritional assessment. Dr. Nieman has more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in journals and books and is a member of eight journal editorial boards including his role as a section editor for Mosby’s YearBook of Sports Medicine. He is the author of nine books on exercise, nutrition, and health. Dr. Nieman sits on the medical advisory board for the Bally Total Fitness Corporation, served two terms as president of the International Society of Exercise and Immunology, and was elected as a basic and applied science trustee for the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Nieman has run 58 marathons and ultramarathons, and was an acrobatic gymnast and coach for 10 years. His marathon PR is 2:37, and he has run the Pikes Peak Marathon twice, with a 16th place finish.
