Overview

Mercy is an angel in exile and is doomed to return repeatedly to Earth, taking on a new human form each time she does. Now she "wakes" as unhappy teen Lela, a girl caring for her dying mother but never herself.

As Mercy's shattered memory begins to return, she remembers Ryan, the boy she fell in love with in another life, and Luc, the angel haunting her dreams. Will Mercy risk Lela's life to be reunited with her heart's true desire?

An electric combination of angels, mystery and romance, Exile is the second book in the undeniably mesmerizing Mercy series.

PRAISE FOR EXILE
"The second installment in the paranormal-thriller series Mercy draws readers into fast-moving scenes, introduces unpredictable characters and further refines the series' underlying celestial mythology. . . . A page-turning sequel that moves this series forward; it should please fans of the first." -Kirkus

"This dark fantasy with its realistically edgy dialogue and gutsy heroine should prove popular with paranormal romance and urban fantasy fans." -VOYA

PRAISE FOR MERCY
"This thriller has a creepiness that keeps the pages turning."-Kirkus Reviews

"Vivid prose highlighting Mercy's sense of isolation will draw readers in...while dramatic tension and the mystery of Mercy's Quantum Leap style body-hopping ought to keep their attention." -Publishers Weekly

"Mercy is a page-turning mystery with touches of romance. Rebecca Lim has created a modern-day Quantum Leap for the teen set (but with angels): well-rounded characters, including a particularly strong heroine; beautiful prose; and a dark and twisting plot that kept me guessing until the very end. Readers will be begging for the sequel."-Laurie Faria Stolarz, author of the Touch andBlue Is for Nightmares series

"Subtly beautiful and utterly intriguing, Rebecca Lim's Mercy series brims with mystery and romance that pull readers through the veil between worlds real and mythical."- Andrea Cremer, New York Times best-selling author of the Nightshade series

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kasey Giard
As punishment for crimes she cannot remember, Mercy is exiled from the angel world, forced to live multiple human lives, driven from one life to another in an endless cycle of suffering. This time, Mercy finds herself within the life of Lela, a dedicated young girl whose life revolves around caring for her terminally ill mother. Mercy weaves through the day-to-day commitments of Lela's small life, but her focus remains turned to the limited fragments she can piece together from the past. In dreams, Luc visits her, telling her of their great love for one another, begging her to find him, or to find the man who can lead Luc to her. This man, Ryan, also loved Mercy, but she struggles to fathom why anyone besides Luc would stir her heart the way Ryan seems to do. Could it be that Luc is not telling her the whole truth? Finding Ryan turns out to be a relatively simple task thanks to the technology available in Lela's world. He promises to meet Lela in a few days, and her heart soars. But to meet Ryan, Mercy must first survive the onslaught of evil that surrounds her. The second book in Lim's "Mercy" series would be better enjoyed by readers who have experienced the first book. Without that foundation, it may be difficult to connect to Mercy's struggle and to understand her somewhat calculated indifference to the life of the human whose body she inhabits. While this novel is based on a fascinating premise, much of this story seems to be devoted to setting the stage for the final scenes. Reviewer: Kasey Giard
Kirkus Reviews
The second installment in the paranormal-thriller series Mercy draws readers into fast-moving scenes, introduces unpredictable characters and further refines the series' underlying celestial mythology. The novel reintroduces the fallen angel Mercy, who separated from her lover, Luc, due to an unrevealed transgression and is doomed to flit between Earth and the unknown with no control over her destination. When on Earth, Mercy inhabits a human body, becoming "a rough facsimile." In this installment, Mercy subsumes Lela Neill, a Melbourne college student who is helping to care for her terminally ill mother while making ends meet by working at a local coffee shop. As with previous inhabitations, Mercy fumbles at first, figuring out her host's personality, daily routine and so on. Unlike previous "soul-jackings," though, Mercy is able to remember past experiences--in particular, those from the first book in the series, Mercy (2011)--that may be able to reunite her with Luc, although humans seem to keep getting in her way. Building on a complicated mythology that was set out in the first book, this is not for series newcomers. Nor is it for readers looking for a light escape, as violence against women is one of its themes. A page-turning sequel that moves this series forward; it should please fans of the first. (Paranormal thriller. 15-18)

    Melancholy Read

In this dark and melancholy read, Mercy, a 'self-named' exiled angel is doomed to repeat life in other bodies, waking up each time confused, disoriented and having to 'learn' the life of her current 're-birth.' This time she is told she must find Ryan and return with him to Paradise, a message she does not fully comprehend. Meanwhile, the host soul/body seems to just 'take a vacation' from consciousness.

This time, she is Lela, a nineteen year old girl whose life is in an unhappy upheaval, her mother is dying of cancer, she has had to give up her plans for college, her dreams for her future to help care for her mother while working as a waitress in a coffee shop where each employee and regular customer seem to have a story to tell. Mercy/Lela is also having strange memory flashes of other lives, a boy she loved, this has never happened before, so far as she knows. Can her past life unlock her future?

Lela is not the most memorable character, she is almost like a shadow playing in the background of the lives and pains of others. Justine, an abused hooker, with a kind heart and a troubled life is aided by Lela, returns the favor and seems much more personable as a character!

There is a quiet mystery about Sulaiman, the tall, North African cook where Lela works. He often appears to look upon Lela with disapproval, but gives her cryptic messages to help her, if only she understood.

In a memorable scene, one of the regulars, Franklin, comes apart in the shop, his life has been painfully sad and he can't take it anymore. Lela connects with him, sees his torment and brings him back from the edge. Unfortunately, for me, this was one of the rare highlights.

I couldn't involve myself in the story. I tried, but it fell flat and I couldn't feel the depth that the author was attempting to display.

Although this was given to me as an ARC read for the upcoming hardcover relsase by NetGalley and the Disney Book Group in exchange for an honest review, it is a currently available title in other forms. Hardcover release date: April 23, 2013.
