Overview

2023's Génesis was, in all senses, a celebration. As the face of modern Mexican music -- and the country's most-streamed artist of all time -- Zapopan-born Peso Pluma has the world at his fingertips. He uses his stadium-sized status to amplify the modern Mexican scene with Exodo, delivering 15 entrancing anthems with a roster of close collaborators and genre figureheads. With the scene's dramatic expansion in 2023, however, there's been a subtle assumption that Pluma will continue that momentum and deliver an album that truly moves the needle. Unfortunately, Éxodo is not that album. 2024's Éxodo is a double album, with two separate discs, but it's as top heavy as they come. Disc one is a 16-track set of a corridos while disc two comprises only eight tracks. Ironically, it's the shorter second disc that is most immediately notable: Peso branches into trap and reggaeton. Despite that change the disc feels like an afterthought, and its tracks all but confirm it. An exception is "Tommy & Pamela," a deliciously nocturnal reggaeton anthem, but the collaborations with Rich the Kid, Quavo, and DJ Snake feel hollow and inauthentic. And while the punchy "Bellakeo" is certain to get the floor moving, it's been active on the club circuit since early in 2024 and its popularity is waning. What could have redeemed this tacked-on second segment was a strong first album with a set of corridos that reinforces Pluma's pinnacle of success. Unfortunately, the corridos here are lyrically indifferent and not only is there a lack of motion here, there's a slight regression. Aside from strong singles like "La Durango," "Bruce Wayne" is the major standout, swinging violently between impassioned melodies and feverish raps as Pluma casts himself as a creature of the night. Collaborators like Neton Vega and Junior H continue to bring out the best in Pluma's lyrics, though the writing is markedly less sharp this time around, perhaps a result of the sparser set of credits here. This lack of bite floods some of the album's production, too, with some of the strings and brass here sounding flat and emotionless. You only need to look at 2023's barrage of regional big-hitters -- Pluma's own inescapable "Ella Baila Sola," the back-to-back hits of El Comienzo, and strong albums from the trio of Nata, Junior H, and Pluma -- to see why fans had higher expectations for this album. Sadly, it's hard for Éxodo to feel like anything but a pause in Peso's momentum. There's a smattering of solid material here, but it's a lateral move at best, and for fans, it's hard not to wish for something more focused, more personal, and more notable. ~ David Crone
