Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Americans are infatuated with their pets, whether they are exotic birds, scaly reptiles, or designer breed dogs. On any street in America, you can find retailers who cater to grooming pets, boarding pets, and feeding pets. Most of our chosen pet-friends appreciate and thrive in all of this attention. However, the domestic cat still remains aloof and above all the clamor. No self-respecting cat will don a sweater, though a few have been seen on leashes, and the cat still maintains control over its household, coming only when it feels the need. Even so, lovers of these feline companions brag about their independent natures and their quirkiness. The Exotic cat is easily recognized by its flat face, snub nose, and short fur. They are often called "teddy bear" cats, which also described their personality. This breed is recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association, which is the world's largest cat registry, as the second most popular breed, placing only behind their longhaired cousins, the Persian. When purchasing through a breeder, you will be able to see what the kitten will look like as an adult cat, because the breeder knows the mother and father of the litter. However, many shelter cats have similar characteristics and would welcome a home. Photographs of a myriad of Exotic cats and the depth of coverage describing health care, grooming, personality, and quick facts make this a valuable resource. The younger reader will enjoy the photos and understand the quick facts on each page. Older readers will find brief paragraphs on each page to expand their knowledge of this breed. This series, "All About Cats," includes titles about different breeds or groups of felines. Each volume is enriched with an index, a glossary of bold type words, recommended readings, and a referral to Capstone's kid-friendly website, where readers can log in and discover more about each title.
