Editorial Reviews

Maureen Wheeler
"Curiosity, courage and fierce determination to remain true to her own search for truth, shines brightly and are at the core of each of Lisa Alpine's stories. To quote Kurt Vonnegut "Strange travel suggestions are dancing lessons from God" - this could be Lisa's motto as she dances wherever the spirit leads her."
Laurie King
"From the stench of a lovelorn sea otter to applause from the Polish Canoe Federation, Lisa delights in unusual experiences around the world. Her spirited and engaging memoir illuminates the role travel can play in the search for self."
Colleen Wilde
"Lisa Alpine’s book is an inspiration to women travelers everywhere. She fearlessly wanders through one obscure destination after the other, leaving her complete trust in the experience. She answers that timeless question – Can solo women travelers really go there? – by doing just that and carrying away some wildly unique stories. Hers are the type of spontaneous and quirky tales that vagabonders dream of when they muse on the possibilities of the open road."
Lulu Gordon
"I finally had a chance to curl up with Exotic Life. Let's just say, it was hard to put down; the book qualifies as class V rapids. Not surprisingly, your writing - like you, is joyful, direct, sophisticated but understated and unpretentious, Hemmingwayesqueish; delivering - not obscuring the story. The stories are the star - as they should be, because they are simply incredible. It is the combination of amazing story with understated delivery that is so enjoyable and effective."
Edward Challberg
"Once again Lisa demonstrates that she knows her audience. This book is so much fun to read. Curling up with "Exotic Life" is like embracing an old friend. Lisa lightly takes your hand and guides you through a selection of her many travel adventures (and mis-adventures) that are bound to make you wince, laugh, cry, gasp, and jump for joy. A great read... highly recommended...!!!"

BOOK REVIEW: "Exotic Life" by Lisa Alpine (Dancing Words Press, 185 pp.)

It is hard to know which would be more fun: traveling and playing with Lisa Alpine or simply kicking back and reading her stories in her new book, "Exotic Life: Laughing Rivers, Dancing Drums and Tangled Hearts"? The book is a series of stories – exciting, often very funny, and always heart-felt.

Full Disclosure: I know Lisa and can testify that being with her is indeed a whirlwind of craziness and ideas and laughter. Lisa is a multitasker on steroids: She is an entrepreneur, writer, traveler, teacher, dancer and all around Renaissance woman, although the Renaissance never was quite this wild.

Lisa dances. Often. Often in the nude, and often, as the stories unfold, in some very exotic places around the world. She also writes. She writes about dancing, and, I expect, she probably dances her writings.

Often, her stories in "Exotic Life" focus on an incident from a long trip that really captures the adventure and uniqueness of why a person would want to travel; especially to places most people never visit. Whether she kayaks down still-wild rivers in Poland, holds onto her stomach in a cattleboat off the coast of Chile, or describes her encounters with local artists in Latin American villages, it is the small things and the fun things she focuses on. The people she meets are a consistent theme here – Lisa’s life is so much fuller for the people she communicates with, eats with and shares with in other lands.

And Lisa writes about love. Falling in love; falling out of love; looking for love; what love means in a frenzied life that keeps moving faster than life usually travels for most of us.

Alpine’s writing skills are well up to the task of describing her many adventures in exotic places. Her descriptions are well-drawn word sketches of her feelings and experiences along the road. Yes, it is not all great experiences or life-long answers. Lisa talks about the bumps and bruises as well as the highs and joys. She takes risks, and is rewarded (well, usually). But she never lets things get her down for long.

In reading "Exotic Life", you will learn a great deal about exotic customs, foods, liquors, parties and celebrations, and the many different peoples that make up the Earth. And dancing.

And, you will laugh with Lisa over the absurdity of it all.
