Far less manic than Billy Goat, the strangely named quartet formed in Austin, TX, and co-released this debut record with Artist Workshop in spring of 1999. Filled with a unique live hip-hop/breakbeat/Latin groove and driven by twisted energy and percussion-heavy compositions, this new flavor for Dillon shows the influence of his work with Critters Buggin, yet continues ...

Following the breakup of cult groove band Billy Goat, veteran percussionist Mike Dillon Brave Combo, Critters Buggin, Malachy Papers, MC 900 Ft. Jesus formed HairyApesBMX with former Goat members, including keys player Zac Baird Cottonmouth Texas and bassist JJ Richards, while picking up drummer John Speice. Far less manic than Billy Goat, the strangely named quartet formed in Austin, TX, and co-released this debut record with Artist Workshop in spring of 1999. Filled with a unique live hip-hop/breakbeat/Latin groove and driven by twisted energy and percussion-heavy compositions, this new flavor for Dillon shows the influence of his work with Critters Buggin, yet continues to build on his 18-year body of work. A cohesive record as a whole, Expatriape mixes lighthearted group choruses on the working-class anthem "$100" and "Jimmy Hat," while tackling deeper issues on songs like "Relapse King," "Her Smile Unloads," and "Missing My Tribe." Regardless of the subject matter, Dillon's projects always come down to instrumental communication that continues to get richer and richer in his interpretation of D.C. go-go, Latin Cumbia, vibraphone-heavy creepy jazz, and the tribal rock sound Billy Goat engineered over a decade ago in Denton, TX. Not that Dillon is an island on this recording. Richards and Baird are both longtime collaborators, and each has his own notable compositions on Expatriape that could easily stand alone in their own contexts, thus making HairyApesBMX at times push and pull into different territory. Featuring guest performances by DJ Nature and Skerik Tuatara, Critters Buggin
