Tracing her love of gardens back to her childhood, Martel reveals how she learned to create one without the use of chemicals, or the latest fashionable tool. Through her journal-like style, she invites us into her garden in the Berkeley flatlands, on her weed-pulling, snail-hunting forays or when she creates a pond or "womb chamber". Most of all, she shares with us how growing things can enrich our lives, connecting us to the larger natural world of which any garden, any gardener, and all of life is a part.

About The Author

A Helpful and Inspiring Gardening Book

What a delightful book this is! I learned a lot about gardening from it, but I also just plain enjoyed reading it. The anecdotes that the author tells about her own experiences, the warmth and humor of her writing, all made it come alive for me. I couldn't wait to get out in my own garden after reading this book. And I thought how lucky her son must be to grow up in such an environment. I think anyone who cares at all about flowers and gardening -- or about children and life -- will get a lot out of this book. I know I did.
