Overview

When our expectations are met and things go according to plan, we feel a sense of accomplishment; we feel safe, in control, and on track. But when life does not live up to our expectations, we end up with an Expectation Hangover. This particular brand of disappointment is profoundly uncomfortable and can cost us valuable time and energy if not treated and leveraged effectively.

Christine Hassler has broken down the complex and overwhelming experience of recovering from disappointment into a step-by-step treatment plan. This book reveals the formula for how to process Expectation Hangovers on the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual levels to immediately ease suffering. Instead of wallowing in regret, self-recrimination, or anger, we can see these experiences as catalysts for profound transformation and doorways that open to possibility.

Often it is only when life throws us a curveball (or several) that we look in a different direction and make room for the kinds of unexpected things that lead more directly to a life we love. By the time you finish this book, you’ll understand why your Expectation Hangover happened and have your own treatment plan — a clear course of action to pursue your goals while preventing future disappointment.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Until we learn to take effective corrective measures, disappointment can become an infectious disease. According to self improvement specialist Christine Hassler (20 Something 20 Everything), those who suffer from what she calls "expectation hangovers" must learn to free themselves from never-ending cycle of self-doubt and self-recrimination. The measures that she recommends are radical: Instead of simply wrestling with past mistakes and misfortunes, she shows how readers can actually use them to become stronger and prepare for coming challenges that life is certain to bring.

From the Publisher

“Christine Hassler’s clear voice reminds us, no matter where we are in life, of a timeless truth: that we all have within us the ability to meet life’s challenges, be empowered through adversity, and move from struggle to grace.”
Arianna Huffington, editor in chief of the Huffington Post and author of Thrive

“If this book has landed in your lap right now, and you’re wallowing in an Expectation Hangover of your own, consider this a sign from the Universe that you’re ready to press ‘fast-forward’ on this phase of your journey. With this book, you will be guided through your Expectation Hangover with love, compassion, and sensitivity to how much you might be hurting right now.”
from the foreword by Lissa Rankin, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Mind Over Medicine and The Fear Cure

“Life is difficult, not unfair. We all need to be truly educated and prepared for life’s difficulties. Christine Hassler’s new book can do that for us. Just as hunger leads us to seek nourishment, an Expectation Hangover can help us to nourish our life. When you are willing to ask yourself, ‘What am I to learn from this experience?’ you will find what ultimately nourishes your life. Her techniques contain the wisdom of the ages and sages. Read, learn, and transform your curse into a blessing and life’s charcoal into a diamond.”
Bernie Siegel, MD, author of The Art of Healing and 365 Prescriptions for the Soul

“Christine Hassler is a divine teacher and guide. In Expectation Hangover, she helps us reframe our disappointment by guiding us to see our obstacles as detours in the right direction. According to life coach and speaker Hassler, people suffer from expectation hangover when they're continually disappointed when life doesn't turn out as expected. To help readers create a future based on understanding who they really are, the author offers a multidimensional treatment plan that includes a range of tools and techniques. In order to deal with emotions, she suggests exercises that revolve around releasing feelings. To address psychological needs, she encourages rewriting one's story. Hassler states that there doesn't need to be disappointment on the spiritual level if setbacks are viewed as opportunities for learning. A particularly handy section of the book contains quick fixes, among them, directing readers to stop people-pleasing and to be of service. The author's best advice: "Don't go to a Chinese restaurant for nachos." VERDICT Hassler's work will equip any reader who is open and committed to change to succeed.
