Overview

Through this drama presentation you will see history in the making as you are taken from the inception of slavery in America to the present day.

Experience in Pride…Journey through African American History” has been presented as a live drama program before thousands of students and individuals in a four state region. For nearly ten years, Because He Cares drama team toured in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Illinois performing “EIP” in schools, colleges, universities, churches, and community organizations!!

This program highlights some of the lives of African American men and women who contributed significantly to American history. Easy to read narrative drives the program and engages the audience through the dramatic portrayal of its colorful and fascinating historical characters.

Through drama and music you share the experiences of Black men and women who made significant contributions to American history. See Harriet Tubman as she leads slaves to freedom, hear the moving and inspiring speeches of W E B Dubois and Frederick Douglass, travel with Mary McLeod Bethune to the Deep South and hear how she started Bethune-Cookman College.
Witness first hand the courage and resilience of a people who refused to give up.

Performances can range from 15 – 60 minutes depending upon your needs. The program can be adapted in length and focus by removing or adding characters’ monologues and supporting narratives allowing the drama to highlight either a cross section of characters or faith-based characters or a specific time period depending on your needs.

This educating as well as entertaining program is now being made available for use in schools, churches; ministries, civic and community organizations. This version contains language geared to older students and adults. However, “EIP” packets are available for elementary students as well. Sample vocabulary words and character synopses are included. A curriculum specialist has approved its language and primary content.

Keep in mind it would be a daunting task to list all the accomplishments of all African Americans in every field or discipline from the Middle Passage to today. The goal of Experience in Pride is to touch upon the various successes of African Americans as it relates to the overall history of this country. Character monologues in this script focus on earlier historical individuals. It is a starting point for further study and research.

hardships and spirit of several key players in American history. The famous African-Americans are introduced through Mrs. Brake's narration and brought to life by the costumed actors.

Meet the Author

In the mid 1980’s when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday was recognized as a national holiday, Yvonne Brake and Fred Johnson saw the need to educate African American children about their rich and proud history. As founder and executive director of Because He Cares, an urban outreach ministry utilizing drama as an educational tool, Yvonne believed the ministry could provide the platform to deliver this message.

In 1986, Yvonne and Fred Johnson, a member of Because He Cares Drama Team, researched and wrote “Experience In Pride…Journey through African American History. For nearly twenty years this play has been presented to tens of thousands of people in schools, churches, universities, community organizations, and ministries in a four state region.

Fred Johnson earned a masters degree in 1993 and a doctorate in 1999 from Kent State University, establishing himself as a noted African-American historian through his scholarship and writing. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of American History at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

At present he is also completing work on America’s Blind Spot: U.S. Foreign Policy in Africa, 1945 to Present. This book examines the history of American foreign policy on the African continent since the end of World War II, assessing how those policies affected America’s actions on the continent (and around the world) during the Cold War, and the lingering impact of that period upon the current Global War on Terror.

Yvonne Brake has a diploma in Church Theology from Ashland Theoogical Seminary, BA in Management from Malone University, and a Master's Degree in Nonprofit Management from Case Western Reserve University.

She is executive director and founder of Because He Cares, Inc. (www.bhcministry.org). “BHC” began in 1980 as a drama group working out of St. John C.M.E. Church in Akron, OH.
