Overview

What you think of Jill Scott's second album, Experience: Jill Scott 826+, is going to depend on how you define the two-hour, double-disc set. Is it, as its title suggests, a live album (recorded mostly on August 26, 2001, in Washington, D.C., hence the "826") plus a bonus disc containing some new studio tracks? Or is it a new studio album with a live disc tacked on? There aren't many artists who can justify the release of a live album after releasing only one studio album, especially when the live album consists almost entirely of material from that one album. The draw here, however, is Scott herself. A performing poet-turned-singer, she clearly knows how to please an audience, and the Washingtonians seem primed, frequently singing along to her songs without prompting and cheering many aspects of the show that can't be appreciated on a mere audio recording of it. If Scott's debut disc found her still in transition from the spoken word to the sung song, she has long since made that shift, and the album is full of vocal pyrotechnics, though, as she herself acknowledges, she talks a lot, even coming off like a standup comic in her defense of her song "Gettin' in the Way." The conceptual unity that tied these songs together on Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 is missing here, but there's no denying Scott's effectiveness as a performer. The "+" disc, however, sounds like a collection of demos for her next album rather than a stand-alone document, even before the extended hidden tracks at the end present alternate versions. (Don't believe the one-minute-and-48-second time listed for the last track; it really runs over 16 minutes.) So, let's call this a satisfying live album with some bonus tracks, a good seasonal stocking-stuffer. [Experience: Jill Scott 826+ was also released in a "clean" edition, containing no profanities or vulgarities.]

Jill Scott has Inspired me to love my husband more now than the first day we shared those three words ..She is an Icon to many of us,and her voice is unforgetable....She brings a new meaning to Queen of Soul

We have heard Aretha at Filmore, Natalie Live, and Baduizm Live, but none compares to the raw funk, and emotion that Jill Scott captures in ''Experience Jill Scott 826+''. Scott's vocal octaves, and power reminds of of true soul music, and supresses the myth that soul is not dead. I'm sure that Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and many other succurbed female vocalist are smiling as Jill's truth, and rare abilities sour even amongst the heavens.

Jill's music is just one of a kind. She is in a class all by herself. Her music is refreshing, soothing. I absolutely love her!!

Jill Scott is an extremely talented vocalist as well as a writer and poet... she creates more than music; emotion, power, beauty..... I love what she's done and I'd HIGHLY recommend this cd to everyone. It's the kind of music you FEEL and not just HEAR. She's up on the top of my list with Ella.

I remember picking up Jill Scott's first CD and having people ask me ''Who is Jill Scott'' but with albums like the first and now this phenominal sophomore project, no one will ever ask that question again!!!!

You looking for an album that you don't have to skip tracks or wait for the better song to get started, this is it. Cool, natural, and comfey. i have had this cd for 4 mounth and i still haven't discovered all it has to offer. The best and hopefully not the last is offered of Jill scott in Who is Jill? Miss Jill is a woman of TALENT and SUBSTANCE! She loves her ''job'' and it comes through in her ''performance'' and ''work ethic''. I have not had the ''Experience'' of seeing her live but the next time she is even in the vicinity, I will be there! Hearing the songs from the first album live, and the various re-interpretations of them (especially Slowly Surely and He Loves Me and Long Walk), is wonderful enough...but then to hear some of the ''leftovers'' from the first album...if these are just some of the 50+ songs she recorded for ''Who Is Jill Scott..'' that didn't make the album, let's throw the rest of them in the stew, too. I will say, honestly, that the Parental Advisory sticker concerned me but when I sat down and listened to ''The Thickness'', I understood why the sticker is in place. Even though the poem/song is brutally honest and raw, Jill demonstrates the ''reason'' for the tone and language.

Jill Scott is off the hook! I had the pleasure of going to one of her concerts, and her CD brings back the nostalgic feeling I had when I saw her live. Now I can feel like I'm at her concert all day long. Right now all three of her CD's are the only CD's getting any play in my car and at home.

I've only heard a few songs from Jill Scott and I feel she's a true talent. Maybe one day she might sing Gospel songs?

Jill scott has outdone herself. At first i was hesitant to buy this album set because it contains some of the same songs that are on Words and sounds Vol. 1. But the live versions are entirely different and exciting. Not to mention the new tracks on the second cd, like gotta get up and gimme. GREAT CD! highly recommended

Jill Scott is a class act all the way. She represents a style of music and sophistication that hasn't been seen in a long time. Her voice and lyrics take you back to your youthful days with a modern day edge. One of today's true devas.

When I heard that Jill Scott was going to put out a live concert album, I couldn't wait. I'm glad that all my waiting was not in vain. This album is truly fantastic!! You really get to know Jill's personality on her concert disc. The new songs on the second disc are also hot. This album made me an even bigger fan of her music.
