Meet the Author

Joseph Goldstein began exploring meditation as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand. Following extended meditation retreats with various teachers in India and Burma, including the renowned Buddhist meditation master Anagarika Sri Munindra, he cofounded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. He has taught numerous meditation classes, workshops, and retreats in America and abroad over the last eight years and is one of the founders and primary teachers of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. He is also the author of The Experience of Insight, Insight Meditation, One Dharma and coauthor of Seeking the Heart of Wisdom.

    Excellent Support For a Meditation Practice

    I have often thought that people writing about Zen Buddhism try to be deliberately mysterious, obscure, and puzzling, and after reading this book, I feel my intuitions have been confirmed because Joseph Goldstein is just the opposite. He easily and clearly explains what Buddhism is about. This book is a transcription of several talks Goldstein gave to a group during a month-long meditation retreat, so the talks have a coach-like quality. The people he was talking to during each of the talks been meditating for many hours, and they were about to go back to meditating, and they had stopped for a short time so Goldstein could encourage them and inspire them to continue to put out the effort. Goldstein also explains and reinforces basic Buddhist fundamentals throughout the talks: the Eightfold Path, the seven factors of enlightenment, the Four Noble Truths, etc. But he explains them all so clearly you will easily see their relationship to the task of meditating. I¿m the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I¿m a sort of specialist: I specialize in being able to tell the difference between ideas that merely sound great and those ideas that actually help in a practical way. Joseph Goldstein is definitely in the ¿practical¿ category. If you meditate and want some good coaching for the tough task of practicing meditation, you¿ve found what you¿re looking for in The Experience of Insight. I recommend it highly. If you have never meditated, this probably isn¿t the best place to start. Get the book Mindfulness in Plain English by Henepola Gunaratana, and start there. Then when you need more encouragement and inspiration and coaching, come back and get Joseph Goldstein¿s book.
