Experimenting With Contrast

Editorial Reviews

Granted, it's a lengthy track, and all but one of the record's nine songs breach the five-minute mark, but enough happens over the course of each tune to merit their nearly excessive lengths. The quintet swirls guitar noises both clean and filthy into a trancelike spiral and then proceeds to completely pummel the listener with any number of more violent musical motives. They go through the motions of Tristeza-like dreaminess, ...

The quintet swirls guitar noises both clean and filthy into a trancelike spiral and then proceeds to completely pummel the listener with any number of more violent musical motives. They go through the motions of Tristeza-like dreaminess, Dischord-influenced monotone vocals that break into more harmonious strains with all types of background additions, and full-blown, off-tempo rock. There's even a creepy cover of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" that closes the record on a significantly bizarre note. All said, though, the Dropscience's wild array of styles and chances taken with instrumentation result in a surprisingly solid disc that may take a few listens to really comprehend, but after that could quickly become a favorite.
