Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of "A True Book" series, this is a short book with explanations of electricity and experiments using static, current and magnets. In the first chapter, author Gray offers some history and a cursory explanation of the scientific method. Unfortunately she skips the concept of multiple trials both in the introduction and later in the experiments. The next chapter does a great job of explaining the basic physics of electricity, starting with a description of atoms. "To understand electricity, we have to learn about atoms. Everything in the universe is made up of incredibly small atoms. Atoms are made up of smaller particles called electrons, protons and neutrons." Several demonstrations and experiments follow, exploring static electricity, currents and electro-magnets. Other parts of the book include a timeline of studies in electricity, a brief biography of Ben Franklin, and true statistics. The book is illustrated with big photos and overall the whole series is very attractive. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
