Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of "A True Book" series, Bryan introduces the force of magnetism to young readers. She explains elements and atoms and then moves on to magnetic metals. "In certain metals, such as iron and nickel, the tiny magnetic fields of the atoms influence other atoms and cause them to line up. All of these aligned magnetic fields add up to create a bigger field. The metal is then a magnet." Other parts of the book talk about Earth's magnetic poles and lodestones. Bryan's experiments and demonstrations include finding iron in cereal, creating a compass, making a magnet, and making an electromagnet. My complaint with these experiments is the same as with the other books in the series. She does not encourage the young scientist to do multiple trials. This omission is unfortunate and has to be unlearned later as students work on more complicated projects. The book is illustrated with colorful photos showing both the experiments in process and the young scientists working on them. Backmatter includes a list of resources, glossary and index.
