Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "My Science Investigations" series, these books are for young scientists, providing an introduction to soil and the scientific method, as well as some hands-on experiments. The introduction shows the reading level of the book. It is both easy to read and informative: "Soil is the top layer of ground that you can grow plants in. It is a mixture of water, air, tiny rocks, and bits of plants and animals." After an introduction to the scientific method, Taylor-Butler jumps into experiments. Her experiments are well set up. She provides a background, hypothesis, and a procedure. Also, unlike many other science experiment books, she recommends doing several trials. Her explanation is brief, and comes at the end of the spread, so hopefully students have concluded the experiment before reading the expected results. Experiments include: sampling and separating soil into parts, using different types of soil as a filter, and composting. This book will work well for an early elementary unit on liquids. Photos of elementary school students performing the experiments accompany the text. The experiments are straightforward but interesting. Backmatter includes a list of more resources, glossary and index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
