Overview

Because at least 10% of a primary care practice involves the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders, internists must have a good foundation in musculoskeletal assessment. This is all the more necessary when the physician has many physically active patients. Active patients include those who regularly participate in a sport or exercise routine and those who engage in frequent physical activity that is not strictly organized or scheduled. Therefore active patients not only include the high school cross-country runner, the college football player, the teacher who jogs every morning, and the real-estate agent who goes to the gym five days a week, but also the construction worker and the accountant who plays softball every weekend. Although Sports Medicine naturally focuses on the many musculoskeletal injuries commonly seen in the office or clinic, other essential topics are also reviewed. These include nutrition, the pre-participation screening examination, cardiovascular conditions, infectious and gastrointestinal diseases, exercise-induced asthma, hypertension, drugs and supplements, and psychological issues.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Chris A. Klenck, M.D., Pharm.D.(University of Tennessee at Knoxville)
Description: This book is designed to provide useful information to primary care physicians who care for athletes and other physically active patients. It covers diverse topics, including both musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal issues. Case studies and tables throughout the text reinforce important concepts.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide primary care physicians with a resource for the evaluation and treatment of patients involved in sports or other active lifestyles. Physicians care for a significant number of patients with musculoskeletal injuries. This book fulfills this objective by covering a number of topics that are likely to be encountered in this patient population.
Audience: The book is targeted to primary care physicians who care for physically active patients. However, it also is a useful resource for medical residents and students interested in sports medicine. Several authors with extensive experience in sports medicine contribute chapters and enhance its value as a resource.
Features: The book discusses a wide range of topics pertinent to sports medicine. Specific musculoskeletal injuries are covered as well as preparticipation screening, nutrition, and chronic disease management in athletes. Each chapter is filled with useful case studies and tables that help illustrate the content of the text. In addition, many illustrations, radiology images, photographs supplement the text. The book does lack in-depth coverage of some topics. However, an extensive reference list is included at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent resource for primary care physicians who care for an athletic patient population. It is well organized and allows the reader to efficiently focus on one topic or multiple areas of interest. The addition of multiple illustrations, photographs, tables, and case studies assist in the retention of information. It would be a valuable addition to any primary care library.
