This book fulfills this objective by covering a number of topics that are likely to be encountered in this patient population.
Audience: The book is targeted to primary care physicians who care for physically active patients. However, it also is a useful resource for medical residents and students interested in sports medicine. Several authors with extensive experience in sports medicine contribute chapters and enhance its value as a resource.
Features: The book discusses a wide range of topics pertinent to sports medicine. Specific musculoskeletal injuries are covered as well as preparticipation screening, nutrition, and chronic disease management in athletes. Each chapter is filled with useful case studies and tables that help illustrate the content of the text. In addition, many illustrations, radiology images, photographs supplement the text. The book does lack in-depth coverage of some topics. However, an extensive reference list is included at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent resource for primary care physicians who care for an athletic patient population. It is well organized and allows the reader to efficiently focus on one topic or multiple areas of interest. The addition of multiple illustrations, photographs, tables, and case studies assist in the retention of information. It would be a valuable addition to any primary care library.
