Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this workmanlike time travel thriller from Swierczynski (Severance Package), 37-year-old Mickey Wade, a struggling journalist who’s lost his job with an alt-weekly newspaper, the Philadelphia City News, accepts his mother’s suggestion to move into his grandfather’s apartment in the city’s seedy Frankford neighborhood. After popping some long-expired Tylenols for a hangover, Wade is transported back to February 22, 1972, the day he was born. Wade’s time-traveling self proves vulnerable to light, as shown by his losing two fingers. On returning to the present, Wade finds those fingers restored but without feeling. Subsequent deliberate trips into the past give Wade some background on the great trauma of his life, the apparently motiveless stabbing murder of his father, a musician known as the Human Jukebox. Predictable complications follow from Wade’s efforts to prevent the killing. This one will appeal mainly to Swierczynski fans. (Mar.)

A lot like the movie Frequency, but not as good

I usually really like the adrenaline writing style of Duane S and this one disapppointed me a little. It is still a very quick read and not a bad way to spend the afternoon, but it just never really connects all the way.

    I Also Recommend:

    Time Traveling Crime Thriller

A Duane Swierczynski novel will grab you by the throat at the first sentence, and by the time you finish the last sentence you are begging it not to let go! Expiration Date is no exception. The plot centers around unemployed journalist Mickey Wade who is forced to move into his sick grandfather's rent-free apartment in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. There Mickey discovers a bottle of pills that transport him back to February 22, 1972, the day he was born. Through his ability to time travel Mickey learns connections between his grandfather, his father's murder, and unsolved serial killings in Philadelphia. Mickey's journalistic instincts drive him forward to discover buried family secrets while the past and present meld together. The pace of the novel is fast and the writing is terrific. Fans of crime fiction, sci-fi, pulp and noir will all find something in this story. I highly recommend Expiration Date as a novel not to be missed!

    more from this reviewer

This is an entertaining complicated time travel tale

Thirty-seven year old reporter Mickey Wade recently lost his position at the Philadelphia City News. Broke and heeding his mom's advice, he moves into the apartment of his ailing grandfather to reduce his costs and to help care for his elderly relative. The Frankford neighborhood is nasty; worse than when he was a child living there and looking forward to escaping from the place. This is where his dad the musician "the Human Jukebox" was murdered.

As Mickey goes to bed with a hangover, he uses expired Tylenol to ease the headache. When he wakes up he finds himself in the neighborhood he knew over two decades ago and is especially shaken when he hears the El passing overhead. Even more shocking is to learn he is breathing on his birth date February 22 1972. He soon learns he can change things when he loses two fingers and, however upon returning to 2009, the fingers are back but useless. He begins to go back to learn more about the man who killed his father; who as a boy lived below his family.

This is an entertaining complicated time travel tale although the premise of going back to change the past even to prevent a murder has been done with plenty of frequency. Still the story line is fun to follow with a few delightful twists including a stunner and the hero is terrific as he meets the "rest of the family" and his dad's killer when the murderer was a tweener. Expiration Date is a fine sub-genre entry, but remembers to throw away those expired pills.

    Harriet Klausner
