Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shelly McCoy
Seeing someone having a seizure is a scary experience. Having the knowledge to help the person, or just to know that they will be alright is powerful. This book provides a medical overview of epilepsy, a condition of the brain that may or may not cause the person to have visible seizures. It explains the different types of seizures, what can trigger seizures, how epilepsy is diagnosed and controlled. The book goes a step further in giving information about how those with epilepsy live their daily lives, with school, sports, and treatments. There is also an important chapter about how you can help a person who is having an epileptic seizure, such as staying calm and putting something soft under their head. As with the other books in this series, the short chapters make it an easy read, but provide much information to help the reader understand the basics of the illness and how it affects those who have it. A brief glossary, index, and page with websites for further information is included. This is a good resource for any school library and a starting place for discussions in a health class context or for understanding what a fellow classmate with epilepsy is going through. Reviewer: Shelly McCoy
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8–The goal of this series is to give readers a better understanding of these disorders since they will often be in contact with sufferers. The writers accomplish this mission quite well, thoroughly explicating the diseases in a way that will not overwhelm readers (text is small but chapters are only two pages long). The books provide basic overviews of the health concerns related to the disease; information on diagnosis and treatment; and a discussion of the challenges or complications experienced by the affected person and their family/friends, and how to manage those problems. The texts close with a chapter about ongoing research and possible future cures. The “Further Information” sections include books that have been published in the past few years as well as a list of appropriate organizations and Web sites. The incorporation of quotes and personal accounts in “Case Notes” sidebars adds to the sensitive tone found throughout the series.
