Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Sandra Lee
Emotionally loaded at some points, Exploitation of Children outlines factually the widespread problem of child labor, as part of the Global Issues series. The author defines child exploitation, and examines the effects of poverty and homelessness. Ennew covers this huge topic with a sectoral approach to child labor in carpet-weaving and other sweat shops, mining, street selling, prostitution, and other areas. Real-life stories from exploited children add personalized impact to the issue. A great strength of the book is its noting the unregulated nature of agriculture and how this affects children in both developing and developed countries. The final chapter about organizing world youth against exploitation is inspiring. Boxes and sidebars provide quick "fact file" and "media watch" information. Black-and-white and color photographs on nearly every page illustrate international situations. This thoughtful and well-outlined look at a huge, invisible subject encourages teen readers to seriously think about the rights of children as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Statistics used reflect some information from the early 1990s. Teens will gain a basic perspective on world issues and human rights violations, but will need to consult other sources to answer larger questions, such as the extent to which the United Nations can enforce children's rights and why these problems continue. Use this book for its insightful presentation and summary of the problem and see UNICEF publications for up-to-date statistics. Web page-http://www.unicef.org/. Glossary. Index. Photos. Source Notes. VOYA Codes: 3Q 2P J S (Readable without serious defects, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
