Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Disckind
Reminiscent of a good textbook, this book uses maps, photographs, and illustrations to balance an extensive amount of text. (Also like a textbook, some of these elements can be confusing at times.) It describes the Arctic and the Antarctic, Arctic inhabitants, and the Polar Regions successful and not-so-successful explorers. Also discussed are the political claims and treaties governing the regions today as well as the impact of humans on these once pristine environments. Substantive information consisting of names, dates, travel routes, descriptions of weather conditions, and more is packed into its 48 pages. A glossary of terms and an index are also provided. There are eight volumes in the "Exploration Into..." series which includes Australia, North America, Africa, China, India, Japan, and Latin America.
