Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
When Mike's dad faces tough times, he packs up and moves on. Mike has never learned to take responsibility for his actions because his father has never shown him how. Mike knows that when the bills began to pile up, they will soon be moving to a new town, a new school, and new friends—not that there have been many of those. The few friends that he has left behind have been the kind of friends that needed to be left behind. Mike never means to get in trouble. He just always seems to be around when trouble comes. Now, in this new town, Mike is ready to start again but there are actions in his past that have followed him here. The judge has offered him the opportunity to avoid juvenile hall by attending the activities of the Explore program. Adult counselors lead young people in team building and survival skills through camping, hiking, and skiing instruction. When Mike finally begins to feel comfortable with this gathering of people, he notices that the bills are piling up at home and he knows that his father is ready to move on. Accepting help from a new friend, Mike is able to face his dad and really communicate how he feels about the new life he has found here and about his reluctance to move on. This is a great story for teens that teaches self-acceptance as well as acceptance of others. Good and bad is not clearly defined in the characters but the reader will be able to discern those judgments for himself. This is a great older, middle grade reader through reluctant readers in high school. The pocket sized edition in paperback is perfect for tucking into backpacks and pants pockets. Part of the "Orca Currents" series. Reviewer: Joyce Rice

"Goerzen does a great job of making the story compelling and realistic...Well written, well paced and has just the right amount of complexity to maintain interest."
CM Magazine
"Teen readers will cheer for Mike's newfound confidence and assertiveness, and perhaps see some important lessons for positive changes they can make in their own lives…Explore has everything a good teen read needs and would be an especially good selection for reluctant readers who are interested in outdoor sports. Recommended."

"All of these additions, like the carved benches, the trails, the firepits," Maggie said, "were made by other Explore classes."

"You'll leave a lasting impression too," said Rick.

Chris stretched and let out a massive yawn.

"Are we keeping you up, Chris?" Maggie said.

He leaned back, arms crossed. "When does this get fun? So far this whole crock is nothing to get excited about.

Twenty Granola faces spun around and stared at Chris. It's just not worth it to lip off in Explore. I had a feeling Chris didn't care.
