Like Harry Pariser¿s other travel guides of the Caribbean, this one is packed with information. Comprehensive and detailed, ¿Explore Costa Rica¿ gives you the sense of being there. The color picture pages show you the majestic beauty of the country as well as the wild life.

The book breaks the country into sections: San Jose, The Meseta Central, The Northern Zone, The Central Pacific, The Southern Zone and the Caribbean Coast. Each gives you detailed maps, hotel information, festivals and events, what to see and do and much more. For example, in the Northern Zone there is a Bat Jungle you can visit and a sky walk on a suspension bridge that runs above the rainforest canopy just for starters.

Harry hasn¿t left anything out. Web sites are listed for hotels, tour guides, restaurants and anything else you might be interested in seeing or doing.

Another incredible book by Harry Pariser. If you¿re planning a trip to Costa Rica, this book should be at the top of your list of tour guide books to get.

We found this to be an indispensable guide with a plethoa of detail and much information not found in other guidebooks. We really enjoyed the author's sense of humor, as well as the extensive background information provided. For example, we learned a great deal about the rainforest and other ecosystems, history, culture, and economy. We also were able to find some great local restaurants as well as several ecolodges that we did not find elsewhere. The book contains thousands of website URLs and e-mails and this was a tremendous help in planning our trip, as was the additional tips and online update found on the publisher's website. The color photos are great also! If you are interested in getting off of the tourist track, then Explore Costa Rica is the best guide we've found to bring along

This is the best travel book out there. It covers absolutely everything with great maps, beautiful nature photos and lots of information about the wildlife, the people and most importantly for me the inns and resorts and which to avoid at all costs. This book is a must have for anyone traveling to Costa Rica, especially the adventurous traveler who really wants to see the country. The online updates are a plus.

Harry S. Pariser's 5th edition of Explore Costa Rica is even better than the other editions, with its 'even more' tremendous amount of background information, tips, and coverage of lesser known places. Pariser is always good when exploring the out of the way places and nuances of a culture, as I found with his other guides such as Puerto Rico and Belize. The sidebar format, too, is valuable for the traveller. The book is easy to pack, and is a wonderful resource. His images are beautiful, and shows that he is a masterful photographer. I personally think he has captured a Costa Rica that would tantalize even the most experienced traveller.

Fifth Edition (2007) Explore Costa Rica, 5th Edition Harry S. Pariser Manatee Press (2007) ISBN 9781893643550 Reviewed by Kelley Anderson for Reader Views (4/07) ¿Explore Costa Rica¿ is a well-written, in-depth guide to visiting Costa Rica. The introduction gives a comprehensive overview of the land, climate, vegetation, animal and social life of Costa Rica. It presents this varied country¿s past and present, reflecting on how the history of the country affects the travel and culture today. Everything you could want to know about Costa Rica is in the book. From money conversion to places to stay, this is an excellent guide to plan your travels. The book breaks down the country into six distinctive areas and presents the unique travel experiences in detail. It is also full of maps, pictures and suggestions from the author, who is obviously very well versed in Costa Rica, both travel and lifestyle. The writing is simple and expressive. I had never thought to travel to Costa Rica, but found myself absorbed in the many possibilities for a vacation or immersing myself in the culture. Each suggestion also comes with a price guide, making it easier to plan your expenses. This includes everything from hotels, local transportation, food, entertainment and more. I have never seen such a thorough guide about any place, especially a foreign country. ¿Explore Costa Rica¿ would be a helpful planning tool for any age traveler. I noticed in each section headings of 'Men traveling alone,' 'Gay and Lesbian travel' and 'Traveling with children.' This seems very insightful and obviously planned by the author to be useful to anyone thinking about visiting Costa Rica. Also, when considering traveling to a foreign country, I always think of two main concerns, health and hygiene and dealing with the local laws which can both be very different from living in the USA. Both of these subjects were covered to my satisfaction, making me feel confident that if I did choose to visit Costa Rica, I could navigate safely through my vacation. ¿Explore Costa Rica¿ had an extensive amount of information on the country, more than I would have thought to ask before traveling. Any traveler considering a vacation to Costa Rica should purchase a copy of this book well before booking any rooms or flights, and carry it with them on their trip.

I truly enjoyed Harry Pariser's 5th edition 'Explore Costa Rica' as it offered many insights on the history of the country, off the beaten trail destinations, travel tips, little known traveler spots, and much more! With very descriptive information and brilliant photos, Costa Rica's myriad of activities seems to come alive. I would strongly recommend this to anyone interested in *experiencing* Costa Rica through the lens of an expert who knows this country like the back of his hand.

Pariser's guide is the most comprehensive Costa Rica guidebook I could find, and (at this writing in February 2007) the most up-to-date. He includes great information for both singles and family travel, and the book covers both the more frequently travelled areas and the many off-the-beaten path places still around in Costa Rica. Highly recommend.

I do quite a bit of traveling and often buy a Lonely Planet guide as a basic reference. Lately, however, I've become somewhat jaded by its formulaic coverage and superficial approach. I'm also skeptical about how they go about choosing which accomodations and restaurants to include in their books. Pariser's book at first glance looks remarkably like a Lonely Planet guide--the same format and much the same information. However, Pariser puts more of himself into it and the book clearly is a labor of love. Pariser's guide compares to Lonely Planet like a family restaurant to McDonalds.

This is is the best travel book I have ever had. It covers everything for a traveler.I normally don't even bother purchasing a travel guide because all of the Travel/Adventure guides that I have ever seen have had generic information in them. They have had very little useful information in them. I can't say enough about this authors books. I wish there were more authors out there producing work of this caliber. This book is a must have for anyone traveling to Costa Rica.

We traveled to Costa Rica with this book. It took us to places we would not have found otherwise. We especially liked the tips, the maps, and the environmental slant. It's really geared towards the adventurous traveler who really wants to see the country. We found the online updates useful as well.

Having lived in Costa Rica for nearly two years and traveled extensively throughout the country, Explore Costa Rica is the ultimate travel guide to have on hand. The book has excellent maps and time saving tips that I wish I had known about prior to my travels. I have used Pariser's books on many occasions and believe they are the best resource on the market. Most importantly, Explore Costa Rica provides the traveler with information that goes well beyond which hotels to avoid and which bus to catch. It provides a fresh perspective that many travellers seek: an historical, social, cultural, and environmental understanding of the places they visit and grow to love.
