What science book could be more dramatic than a pop-up book about earthquakes and volcanoes? Even the cover has a three-dimensional and very tactile illustration of an exploding volcano. The illustrations are a mix of painted pictures, computer generated art, technical maps and charts, and historical photographs. Each double-page spread features a flap to flip-out, a pop-up, or a special tab to pull. These all help to physically and mentally engage the reader, and some of these are very dramatic. On the seaquake page, a huge, 3D paper pop-up of a tsunami jumps right off the page. Each page has a special person from history introducing the topic. These figures speak directly to the reader in first person as if they were giving a personalized tour of the topic. The figures include Greek gods, Roman gods, a Hawaiian goddess, Aristotle, scientists, a seismologist from ancient China, Captain Cook, a search and rescue dog, and even a special robot designed to explore the insides of volcanoes. The book starts by defining earthquakes and volcanoes and then recounts some of the ancient beliefs that explained their presence in the world. Next, they look at tectonic plates, fault lines, shock waves, measuring and predicting earthquakes, the risks of living within an earthquake zone, the search and rescue operations, a seaquake, and a tsunami. The last part of the book deals with volcanoes and explains the anatomy of a volcano, volcano zones, sizes, shapes, the birth and death of volcanoes, studying volcanoes, and famous earth-shattering volcanic eruptions. Words that appear in bold within the text are explained in the glossary at the back. This book is part of Silver Dolphin Books' "Explore It"series, which includes the titles Amazing Machines, Ancient Egypt, and Earthquakes and Volcanoes.
