Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Underwater equivalents of our national parks, the 13 U.S. marine sanctuaries are distinctive offshore areas designated for protection by the 1972 National Marine Sanctuaries Act. This volume—which covers the Florida Keys, Flower Garden Banks (TX and LA), and Gray's Reef (GA)—is the first in a planned series that will include the West Coast, the Northeast, and the Pacific Islands. Jean-Michel, the son of Jacques Cousteau, and his group, Ocean Futures Society, dived and photographed each area. Beautiful images of animals and plants as well as sections on visitors' centers, Chambers of Commerce, ecotours, boating and sailing rentals, locations of boat ramps, restricted areas, diving and snorkeling permits, and dive sites are useful resources for visitors and whet the appetite of armchair travelers. The damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon explosion is noted, and Cousteau's preface expresses the hope for petroleum substitutes in the future. VERDICT Other books on the marine sanctuaries are technical and specialized. This attractive guide for lay readers will interest divers, photographers, tourists, conservationists, and marine biology buffs.—Judith B. Barnett, Univ. of Rhode Island Lib., Kingston
