Boys and girls will be enthralled by this dramatic pictorial history of the great ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic, and its fateful sinking in the North Atlantic. Approximately 125 photos and illustrations in color and black and white--including 12 astonishing 3D-rendered graphics--tell the Titanic's story, from its 1911 launching at the Belfast shipyard to its tragic destruction on April 15, 1912 during its maiden Atlantic crossing. Young readers will see faithful reproductions of both exterior and interior ship's details, from the Boiler Room and Engine Room far below decks to the luxury passengers' cabins and the ship's grand ballroom. Among the 3D-rendered artworks are two remarkable double-gatefold illustrations--
  • The Titanic under steam
  • A cutaway diagram of the ship

Other 3D artworks include--

  • The Grand Staircase in First Class
  • A First Class Cabin "Parlor Suite"
  • The Bridge and Wheelhouse
  • The First Class Dining Room
  • Second Class Promenade Deck
  • The Grand Staircase flooding as the ship sinks . . . and more

The end product of meticulous research, this book's 3D-rendered artwork virtually draws readers aboard the ship, employing painstakingly realistic facsimiles of details both large and small. Enclosed with this unusual book is a CD-ROM that walks viewers through the ship's interior from stem to stern, showing hundreds of details. Viewers can zoom in and out to examine details more closely, and they can move around inside cabin interiors in a way that heightens the illusion of realism.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

The R.M.S. Titanic never finished its maiden voyage, but it remains one of the most famous ships in history. Its tragic 1912 iceberg sinking in the North Atlantic sent this majestic liner to the bottom of sea, but young readers can now reconstruct its fateful history through this extraordinary visual reconstruction. Explore Titanic reveals the cabins, dining rooms, and decks of the beautiful passenger liner in 125 black-and-white and color photographs and illustrations, including 12 spectacular 3D-rendered graphics, two of them stunning double-gatefold illustrations. Enclosed in the hardcover is a meticulously planned CD-ROM that enables viewers to pass through the corridors, rooms, and decks of the supposedly unsinkable Titanic. A treat for adults and kids alike.

From the Publisher

"Astonishing pictorial history of the ill-fated liner reconstructs all the ship's details with dramatic gatefolds and an enclosed CD-ROM that walks viewers through the ship's interior."

Gr 2–4—The focus of this volume is the digital re-creations and enhancements of period photographs that bring the Titanic to life and provide a realistic, inside look from top to bottom. While information about the ship, the people involved, and the tragic events of April 1912 is kept fairly brief and sticks to conventionally accepted facts, there is a visual feast at every turn of the page. The eye lingers over minute details in the various rooms, imagining passengers lounging on teak deck chairs or swimming in the pool. The scrapbook-style format is particularly appropriate, inviting readers to see how familiar black-and-white photos have been transformed into full-color images that give a firsthand perspective. The CD provides an opportunity to move around a virtual replica of the ship, checking out rooms on all levels, from the wheelhouse to the boiler rooms. Libraries looking to supplement their Titanic collections will find this to be an interesting visual choice, but those looking for real substance on the topic may want to look at Stephanie McPherson's Iceberg, Right Ahead (21st Century Books, 2011) or Barry Denenberg's Titanic Sinks! (Viking, 2011)—Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA

great for children & adults alike

purchased this book for a christmas present for my grandson. He is only 8 years old, but has a fascination with the titanic, and has become a walking encyclopedia on it. I found it astounding the amount of knowledge he already knows, especially the ships "bones". It comes with a CD which I think he will love, I flipped through the book, It's very informative & the pictures are great. I'm big on history, and I really think he will enjoy this book....... heck, I enjoyed it!
