Overview

Following the path he took on NEW BLUES FOR MODERN MAN, guitarist, songwriter, and singer Duke Robillard goes for a rockin' sound on Explorer but reaches further into R&B with Sax Gordon and Doug James's saxophones providing ambience. "Soulful" has the feel of Otis Redding, "Hang On" would be a perfect tune for Sam & Dave, and "You Mean Everything to Me" has the snakey gris-gris sound of Dr. John. The Duke even goes a little country on "Lonesome Old Town." While Robillard is known first as a guitarist, with the exception of the jazzy "Time Is Short," he doesn't do a lot of stretching out on this set, preferring to play tasty little solos that enhance the tunes rather than drive them. And he has concentrated on his songwriting, which ranges from the catchy "Male Magnet" to the low-down "Misunderstanding the Blues." It's risky business moving away from being a guitar icon, but in the case of Explorer, Robillard has broken new ground.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Campbell
No matter what musical turn singer/guitarist Duke Robillard chooses to incorporate, it is always steeped in the blues. Explorer is his second release on the Shanachie label and integrates jazz ("You Mean Everything to Me" and "Jumpin With Duke"), horn laden soul ("Male Magnet," "Just between Me and You"), New Orleans-style rumba ("Sayin Don't Make It So"), and even Celtic overtones ("Lonesome Old Town"). Explorer lives up to its title and finds Robillard and his band providing another eclectic blues
oots set in the process.
