How is it possible that black holes have gravitational pull? This is just one of the questions addressed in this book. The pull, Waxman explains, is much more powerful than the Sun's gravity, which is stronger than that of the Earth, its moon, and other planets. Scientists continue to examine mass in relation to gravity since black holes have at least three times more mass and gravity than the Sun, perhaps billions more! Complex scientific concepts are discussed with kid-friendly text and vivid NASA diagrams, drawings and photographs. Books in the "What's Amazing About Space?" series include robots, travel, exoplanets, dangers, and the International Space Station (ISS). The study of this incredible mystery began with John Mitchell and Pierre-Simon LaPlace hundreds of years ago; Albert Einstein and Karl Schwarzchild brought further advancements during the 1900s. However, scientists could not verify the existence of black holes until the 1970s, when they could use special equipment to detect X-rays. Gases and dust are heated by black holes which give off light and energy. In addition, large dying stars (much bigger than the Sun) form stellar black holes when they explode as hydrogen gas runs out.
