Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Eight short chapters describe the essential characteristics of the autumn season. Fall is a season of change as the earth prepares for winter. The seasons change due to the tilt of the earth as it travels around the sun. Fall begins when Earth's axis starts to point away from the sun. As the days get shorter, the diminished amount of sunlight causes lower temperatures and sometimes nighttime frost. Lakes and ponds get cold, but the lingering heat in ocean waters can cause hurricanes. Trees stop making food, so green leaves change colors and then drop off. Animals get ready for winter by storing food or eating more. Some birds migrate to warmer climates. People wear long pants and sweaters as the air cools. Farmers in the Northern Hemisphere harvest crops as those in the Southern Hemisphere plant seeds during their spring weather. The full-page photographs facing each page of text are exceptional. The vivid colors and detailed images in these pictures are outstanding. Includes a glossary, a bibliography, and an index. A good introduction to the fall season for young children. Part of the "Exploring the Seasons" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
