Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Bagel
The second in a series of children's books that celebrate the appreciation of the visual arts, this volume features twelve twentieth century landscape artists including Pieter Bruegel The Elder, George Inness, Albert Bierstadt, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Rousseau, William J. Glackens, M.C. Escher, Stuart Davis, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler and Richard Estes. An entire page is devoted to a full-color reproduction of one of the artists' works, accompanied by a brief biography of the artist. Interesting questions for discussion about each painting are designed to encourage a child's natural curiosity and powers of observation, whether this is being read to children at home or in a classroom setting. For example, in Richard Estes "Michigan Avenue with View of the Art Institute," we are asked: "What are some of the different ways the artist shows us that this is a large city? If you were standing on this street, what noises would you hear? What clues does the artist give to help you decide?"
Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
Each of twelve paintings in this oversize (10- x 10-inch) volume is paired with a facing-page of text, one half devoted to questions that encourage perusal, reflection and dialogue, and the other half to information about the artist. This and other titles in the multi-volume "Come Look with Me" series, are as easy to share with a small group as with a single youngster snuggled close. Discovering Photographs with Children, Exploring Landscape Art with Children, Animals in Art, Native American Art, and World of Play complete the series.
Library Journal
This is a wonderful book that will enrich any adult or child. Many children's books have lovely illustrations, but this one uses colorful and well-reproduced landscapes created by famous artists on one page, along with brief texts about the artist and picture on the next. Thoughtful questions are posed to help create awareness and understanding of a situation, and to help youngsters probe the paintings in-depth. This is an unusual book in that it can be enjoyed by the very young and their parents, or employed as an exceptional teaching tool by art teachers. Although the volume is slim, it can be experienced again and again. This will be a worthwhile addition to any public library.-- Annette V. Janes, Hamilton P.L., Mass.
