Exploring Probability and Statistics with Spreadsheets is an introductory text which offers an exciting and fresh approach to understanding probability and statistics. Most recent statistical texts have used dedicated statistical software packages where the analysis is semi-automatic; this obscures the underlying concepts and is thus not an ideal learning medium. However, with spreadsheets, this is not the case, the user has to set up the analysis. Probability theory is fundamental to the teaching and understanding of statistics and spreadsheets are an ideal medium for applying probability theory, particularly the application of the laws of probability. Furthermore the easy to use graphical facilities of spreadsheets are an excellent aid to learning, giving an intuitive grasp of difficult concepts. Covering the essentials of a course in statistics and aimed at students from a range of disciplines, this stimulating text offers the student the chance to really grasp an understanding of the subject. Special features include: designed to be used with any spreadsheets; illustrates difficult concepts with no complicated mathematics; gentle pace motivates students who may have weak numerical skills.

Editorial Reviews

An introductory text on statistics and probability for students of engineering, science, and business who have had no previous exposure to the subject, and only a semester of algebra and calculus. Complaining that most software packages for teaching statistics are semi-automatic and obscure the very underlying concepts they are supposed to be teaching, uses spreadsheets instead, for which the learner has to set up the analysis. Incidentally, provides experience using spreadsheets. No bibliography. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
