About the Author

David Lillard has hiked the AT in ten states and lives with his wife, Lauren, within view of the AT's passage over the Blue Ridge. He is president of American Hiking Society, a national hikers' advocacy organization, and publisher of American Hiker, the group's magazine. Lillard serves on the board of The Land Trust of the Eastern Panhandle, a West Virginia conservation group, and on the corporation council of New York's Adirondack Mountain Club.

Gwyn Hicks grew up exploring the hills of northern New Jersey, not far from where the AT cuts through the Delaware Water Gap. Turning trail conservation into a profession, she has served as director of communications for American Hiking Society and editor of American Hiker. When she is not working to protect trails, she enjoys spending time hiking them with her husband, Steve.
