Overview

Exploring the Dimensions of Human Sexuality, Fourth Edition addresses all aspects of sexuality—biological, spiritual, psychological, and sociocultural—and presents the information both factually and impartially.Throughout the text, students will find an emphasis on health and well-being based on the assumption that we are all sexual beings and that sexuality should be viewed in its totality. Students are encouraged to explore the varied dimensions of human sexuality and see how each affects their own personal sexuality, sexual health, and sexual responsibility.

This book beautifully and effectively presents all aspects of sexuality:biological, spiritual, psychological, and social/cultural:as interconnected and significant. This new textbook is designed around central theme that our feelings, attitudes, and beliefs regarding sexuality are continually influenced by our internal and external environments. The boxed feature program, additional pedagogy, and ancillaries of this new textbook have been designed around these core concepts.

Description: This new edition of a book on human sexuality brings with it new research, up-to-date information including 400 new references, critical thinking questions, and clarification of certain topics such as alternative sexual behavior. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: As our culture and standards about sexuality evolve, so must the textbooks that we use to teach human sexuality. The authors accomplish the goal of presenting up-to-date theories and research in human sexuality, providing vivid examples and illustrations. The authors strongly believe that understanding human sexuality is a part of a healthy personality. While there are some constants to human sexuality, the authors provide realistic examples, examine challenges, and provide a well-balanced presentation of sexuality as interconnected and significant.
Audience: Although this is a college-level textbook, I can certainly see it being adopted for use at the graduate level with its rich and engaging material. Instructors will find the book easy to use and presentation of the material straightforward with real-world examples to aid in teaching.
Features: The 18 chapters cover all aspects of sexuality and the book includes many strong features such as an "In Focus Minichapter on Body Image," critical thinking questions, myth versus fact listings, chapter-opening stories, and interactive review sections at the end of chapters. The book also comes with an online access code for students to log on to the Bartlett Learning resource. There are also many available supplements for the book including PowerPoints, test banks, a study guide, a new interactive online workbook, and a book website.
Assessment: This is an outstanding and comprehensive book that is straightforward, easy to read, and unquestionably impressive.
