Conceived as a primer for beginning and intermediate designers, Exploring the Elements of Design is a straightforward, dynamic presentation of the latest in graphic design concepts. The text explores primary design elements and principles as well as theories in the use of color, typography, and imagery, with each concept accompanied by examples from contemporary graphic designers. Recent insights on creative thinking, visual problem solving, and research strategies are also presented, and the book concludes with an overview of the field of graphic design and related career options. Both authors teach in the Communication Arts Department at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Zapaterra's Art Direction and Editorial Design covers much of the same territory as Evans and Thomas's book, but not in as much depth. It is, however, more accessible and inspiring. The examples and case studies Zapaterra uses to illustrate the fundamentals of visual journalism are taken from fresh and exciting sources in America, England, Brazil, France, and Germany and from the Internet. One can compare design in the New York Times Magazine, for instance, with that of Folha de S. Paulo. The author has written four books on design and is a regular contributor to Design Week and Grafik. Zapaterra's book is highly recommended for all collections, while Evans and Thomas's is recommended for academic collections.

Meet the Author

Poppy Evans is an award-winning writer and graphic designer who teaches and lectures on art and design. Most recently, she served as Assistant Professor at the Art Academy of Cincinnati where she taught for 16 years. Now retired, she continues to teach art and design at local colleges and universities. Her background includes serving as managing editor for HOW magazine and as board member for HOW magazine's Editorial Advisory Board. She is also a former board member for Cincinnati AIGA. In addition to co-authoring the Exploring the Elements of Design, she is the author of Exploring Publication Design, 12 other book titles for graphic designers, and hundreds of magazine articles. Prior to teaching and writing for the design industry, she worked for many years as a graphic designer and magazine art director.

Mark Thomas is Professor and Chair of the Communication Arts Department at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he has been teaching for 25 years. Mark has developed courses in design research methods, illustration, and design systems as well as a thesis program for communication arts. He is a graphic designer, illustrator, and published author who has designed numerous exhibitions, catalogues, and posters for graphic designers, fine artists, and illustrators. An award winning designer for educational board game design, he holds a U.S. Patent for an educational color demonstration device and method for teaching color theory. He also serves as President of the Board for AIGA Cincinnati.
