But standard bearers are well represented by Cash, Gram Parsons "In My Hour of Darkness", Steve Earle, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore; the next wave by Gillian Welch, the Jayhawks, Freakwater, Southern Culture on the Skids, and others. These are supplemented by an interesting array of compelling bands and solo artists that have made their mark along the way Whiskeytown, Meat Puppets, Kelly Willis, BR5-49, et al.. Informed annotation by the coeditors of No Depression magazine -- alt country's other Bible -- places the players and the music in historical context.
All Music Guide - Cub Koda
This two-disc compilation is subtitled "the best of alternative country" and brings together 24 performances from artists who are a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll, and sometimes a whole lot of both. A nice selection of big to recognizably big names aboard Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Gram Parsons, Vic Chesnutt, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Steve Earle, BR-549, Meat Puppets makes this a far more interesting collection of music than what's being programmed on your local "hot young country" radio station at the moment. A compilation that shows just how connected country and punk rock truly are.
