Overview

Charles Wilson has received the highest praise from authors such as John Grisham and from reviewers, including being termed "Wizard Plotter" by the Los Angeles Times. Now, he has created his most chilling story yet-- a fast-paced thriller so realistic it will take your breath away and keep you riveted to the page.

From the Gulf of Mexico's warm shallow waters...to the deepest parts of the Pacific...terror comes to the surface...

Six-year-old Paul Haines watches as two older boys dive into a coastal river...and don't come up. His mother, Carolyn, a charter boat captain on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, finds herself embroiled in the tragedy to an extent she could never have imagined.

Carolyn joins the marine biologist Alan Freeman in the hunt for a creature that is terrorizing the waters along the Gulf Coast. But neither of them could have envisioned exactly what kind of danger they are facing.

Yet one man, Admiral Vandiver, does know what this creature is, and how it has come into the shallows. And his secret obsession with it will force him, as well as Paul, Carolyn and Alan, into a race against time...and a race toward death.

Meet the Author

National bestselling author Charles Wilson has become known for edge-of-your-seat tension and fast-paced action in his novels. His first work, Nightwatcher, a psychological thriller, was called "splendid" by John Grisham and "quite an achievement" by the Los Angeles Times. Ed Gorman, publisher of Mystery Scene magazine says, "Wilson might flat-out be the best plotter of our generation." Wilson's Direct Descendant and Extinct, novels exploring the chilling consequences of so-called scientific advances, have been optioned by Hollywood filmmakers. Other Wilson novels are Game Plan, Fertile Ground and Embryo; three suspense novels, When First We Deceive, Silent Witness and The Cassandra Prophecy; and coming soon in hardcover, Deep Sleep-- a psychological thriller set in a Voodoo-influenced swampy parish in South Louisiana. Charles Wilson currently lives with his wife and three children in Brandon, Mississippi, where he is at work on his next novel.

A quick read, the book features a fair amount of action. Wilson was able to bring me into the story; I almost felt like I was there. The book raises the 'what if' idea, leaving the reader wondering if this could actually happen. If you liked Jaws, Jurassic Park, or the like, read this book.

Extinct is an entertaining read with interesting characters and a decent story. More action could have probably helped the book, but Wilson does a very good job of creating some tense, spine tingling scenes. The story is decently written and is a fast, entertaining read. Not a classic but enjoyable nontheless.

I read this book and I was captivated by it. I couldn't put the book down. and read it in about 4 days after work. The detail in the book is amazing. I loved how the charles Wilson described everything about character's and what Megladon did. I definatly reccomend this book.

I have read many of Charles Wilson's books and haven't been disappointed yet. This book is by far my favorite. I consider myself an action fan and I loved the book. The characters were very well written and the shark scenes were excellent. I still have to read the latest two books, but I'm sure they'll be awesome too.

A taut thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Well-paced excitement that keeps you turning the pages and always wanting more. Better than 'Jaws.' A great read.
