The latest in the “Hidden Forest” series is a bit of a disappointment to those looking for the expected fairy tale with happy creatures and a warm, fuzzy feeling. The book is created in the newspaper format, and the story loses something in this presentation, perhaps because the lack of color on many of the pages and large amount of text is distracting for the youngest readers. Aside from those criticisms, this is a creative offering for older children and adults who can compartmentalize segments of unfinished articles or stories, and are able to comprehend complicated thoughts. They will find this book much to their liking. The stories follow a giant beanstalk, a lost puppet, a unique chicken, and a race between a rabbit and a turtle. One element added is the opinion and editorial page, which should allow for brisk, thoughtful and reflective discussion. This provides an excellent springboard for a pro-con type of assignment or discussion, even as it is a comical poke at the strong opinions of some of the village’s residents. Tryon’s illustrations are as superb as ever. Even the back page ads are worth attention, and readers should look at every word. In the end, all of the characters have resolved their differences and appear happy--the culmination of all good fairy tales! Reviewer: Elizabeth Young

Ada's latest is a continuation of the Hidden Forest series of fairy-tale adventures, but this time, several editions of the Hidden Forest News newspaper replace the letters of the previous books. Subscribers follow many news stories, the most notable being the saga of the mysterious beanstalk and the related disappearance of Jack Blake. Op-ed pieces illustrate the controversy surrounding the beanstalk. Also newsworthy is the closing of Geppetto's toy shop, the beginning of Half-Chicken's journey to Mexico City (both International news) and the intended race between the Tortoise and the Hare (Sports). The "Back Page" lists the advertisements. Readers with a thorough grounding in fairy tales will laugh out loud at the allusions and double entendres that are the hallmark of Ada's writing. Tryon's busy full-color illustrations will keep readers' attention as they search for hidden details. The newspapers themselves are illustrated with small tongue-in-cheek black-and-whites.
