research with hauntingly good photographs about the people who "made history" aboard the orphan trains from New York. Author Renee Wendinger, herself the daughter of an orphan train rider, enlightens readers with compelling stories from this fascinating episode in American history.
From 1854 to 1929 an estimated 250,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children were placed out on orphan trains from immigrant saturated East Coast cities, particularly New York City, to 47 states and Canada to find a family and a home. Wendinger describes the journey as the largest mass migration of children ever to take place upon American soil.
Another unique segment of history in Wendinger's book tells about the newsboys and girls coming of age. How an allegiance to a code of honor learned in the streets of New York sets them through a multitude of challenges: gambling, family disasters, stealing and begging, and ultimately a one way trip west on the orphan trains. These stories give way to the tough times, personal clashes, and ultimate triumphs and tribulations of the children of train.
A college level study course has been based on Wendinger's book alone.
