Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

He's the host of TV's Extra and MTV's America's Best Dance Crew; he's been a film star and the runner-up on Dancing with The Stars; but Mario Lopez is also a busy father with a stress-inducing schedule. The urgency of eating right and staying trim inspired him to write his bestselling Extra Lean. In this new abundant resource, he applies his Extra Lean philosophy to family eating. Extra Lean Family contains essential info to convert your household fast food fanatics into a trim and healthy team. This 300+-page book contains grocery lists; food prep ideas; dozens of recipes that can be prepared in 20 minutes or less; snack ideas; a food journal; nutritional guidelines; and more. A one-stop kitchen tutorial for caring moms and dads.

Publishers Weekly
Lopez is back with over 50 simple snacks, meals, and desserts to expand repertoires and shrink waistbands. Even non-followers of the author's Extra Lean program will add new lower-calorie meals to their recipe box. And followers will appreciate basic cooking instructions for each dish and charts breaking down carbs, protein, and fat. As for the dishes, once dieters have embraced apples, peanut butter, hummus, and carrots-snacks they'll eat regularly-Lopez offers variety with dishes like Ginger Garlic Shrimp, Veggie Quesadillas, and Orange-Glazed Salmon with Brown Rice and Roasted Broccoli. Readers hoping for speed will find it, but many recipes, such as Pancakes with Strawberry Sauce and Banana-Coconut Muffins, require extra prep time. A father himself, Lopez does an admirable job of including kid-friendly recipes and suggestions for dealing with picky eaters. Busy families will appreciate his once-a-week shopping lists and tips for leftovers, ensuring no ingredient goes to waste. Though he occasionally attacks portions in order to fit his "low-cal" tag-one lunch is just a PB&J and a glass of skim milk-harried cooks who want to keep it healthy could do a lot worse.

Kirkus Reviews

Actor Lopez expands his cookbook series to encompass families.

A new father, the author shares sage advice for parents about the importance of diet and nutritional awareness for their children. While his first book,Extra Lean, focused on balancing carbohydrates, fats, proteins and portion size, here Lopez introduces more mindful food choices via a three-part regimen of understanding, preparing and applying his lean-family principles to everyday life.Other sections describe how food influences metabolism and why carbohydrates are so addictive, and the author stresses the importance of Omega acids, fiber, water intake and keeping a food journal. Lopez's comprehensive five-week meal plan includes a grocery list, time-saving tips and food suggestions heavy on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Big-dish dinners include Spicy Turkey Chili, "Paella-Style" Chicken and Rice and Bacon and Cheddar Macaroni Casserole—all healthfully reinvented. Curry-Roasted Shrimp with Cashew Couscous, Ginger-Garlic Shrimp and Chili-Rubbed Pork Chops tempt with the robust flavors of cumin, curry and lime juice. For the blander palate, recipes for Homemade Fish Sticks made with cod and cornflakes, omelets and turkey meatloaf are offered alongside several realistic dessert recipes—e.g., premium ice cream is encouraged for sundaes, just limit the portion size. Outside of graphs and nutrient charts, the visuals are not the book's strong point. Mundane photos of baby carrots, eggs and sliced bread hardly complement Lopez's stock, stiffly posed photographs. However, the author effectively demonstrates how parents can effectively coach their children about healthy snacks, vitamins and how to "dejunk" life.

A must-have for Lopez fans, but this one's written for families who want better control over the dining-room table.

    more from this reviewer

Easy to read and follow well organized plan for a lifetime of healthy eating for you and your children.

I wanted to review Extra Lean Family because being Mexican Mario has many issues I have when it comes to family tradition and eating. I myself am Hispanic and was born in Puerto Rico although my ancestors came from Spain. I have found this book to work for my family and me when it comes to nutrition, meals and our total health. In the introduction Mario points out how he struggled with eating right as a young adolescent and into his teens. He points out the main goal of his books are is to help others find the right balance when it comes to nutrition. Now that he is married and has a family of his own he has decided to extend that information with this Extra Lean Family book. Chapter 1 of the book is quick and focused on the metabolism, calories, servings good and bad fats and other information, including child size portions. Just a refresher if you already know some things and great insight for others who do not, especially when it comes to child portions. The second chapter moves on to what kinds of foods you should and should not have in the house, shopping for the right foods and food labels. Chapter 3 helps you maintain the Extra Lean habits. While chapter 4 is "the five week meal plan." which includes a grocery list for each week, simple family recipes and nutrition information. In chapter 5 the focus goes to the nutrition of the child, including healthy snacks, options for the picky eater and really good points on how to help your child eat better without being overbearing. Even if we can't get our kids to eat right we can at least show them how to by example, which later can be a great benefit once they get older and realise the importance of it, a great point in the book. Chapter 6 leads into other helpful tips like how to fool your appetite, fast food rules and some pointers on physical fitness.

Overall what I liked most about this book is that it is a condensed 250 pages with tons of great information. So it is not over whelming parents to read and begin to use this nutrition plan, a plan that regular hard working people can implement into their lives. It can be so hard for parents to stick to a family meal plan when they spend all day at work and come home to parenting. Extra Lean Family is not a book for those who are looking to have their fa, in our fast paced society. This book is not a weight loss book for a family to lose weight on a special diet. It is not a get thin quick scheme and yes some of these concepts in the book you probably have already even heard of or read before. However it is a well organized book, a book on how to lead a happy healthy lifestyle with food, to help us parents implement daily healthy habits into our lives and the lives of our children, so they can continue to eat healthy into their adulthood and later pass it on to their own children someday.

    Sounds good!

I just finished reading this entire book....recipes and all. This book contained all information that i already knew. Just the basics of eating healthy. Portion control, healthier carb choices, eating a variety of different foods in small meals throughout the day. I havent started following the plan yet, but i intend to. What i really like about it is the week by week grocery lists and meal plans. I hate making a menu and shipping list so this could help alot. I also like thatvall the meals and snacks are designed for a family of four. I think this a a great addition to your healthy eating/lifestyle bookshelf.
