Overview

Every year millions of people travel to Southeast Asia for business or pleasure. Here, in one handy paperback volume, they can find a beautifully illustrated guide to 30 of the region's most interesting and unusual museums. Encompassing art, history, ethnographic, and military collections, and ranging from the national museums of Cambodia and Malaysia to relatively unknown treasures such as the Tribal Museum in Chiang Mai, Thailand, these repositories reflect the rich diversity in the cultural heritage of the area.

All of the museums are located in major cities or at archaeological sites frequently visited by tourists. Along with a map showing the location of each museum, travelers will find addresses, telephone numbers, and days and hours of admission. The accessible format and compact size makes this the practical guidebook for tourists, while the engaging and informed text serves as a lively introduction to the culture, art, and history of this vibrant region.

Author Biography: Kristin Kelly is a senior project manager at the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles. From 1990 to 1999 she was manager of administration at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
There are many notable museums in continental Southeast Asia, but they are perhaps less known to tourists than the highly touted museums of Europe. Kelly, an American museum professional, describes 30 of them, ranging from the "national" museums of Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar to some of the more unique treasures, such as the Hoa Lo Prison Museum of Hanoi (also known as the "Hanoi Hilton"), the Jim Thompson House and the Siam Society's Kamthieng House of Bangkok, the Royal Palace Museum of Laos, the chilling Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum of Cambodia, and the wonderful little historical museum tucked away in the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. While most guidebooks mention these attractions, Kelly picks the most worthwhile, places them in historical and cultural context, and provides better-informed descriptions of their contents. The photos are excellent. This attractive but durable and portable book fills a gap in travel collections of all libraries; highly recommended. Harold M. Otness, formerly with Southern Oregon Univ. Lib., Ashland Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
